Well, I just finished "Fate is the Hunter". Man, Ernie Gann should be required reading to remind us of the innocence of flight.

Here's a few quotes that I particularly enjoyed.

"But the seniority system must ever persist if only because it is a protection of the weak, who are everywhere in the greatest number"

In regards to a dilapidated DC-3 nicknamed "No-Go"......
"Smith said, in his mild way, that while he appreciated its strength of character he would prefer an airplane with a lesser passion for the earth."

Anybody have any other good book-born aviation quotes?
I think we all pretty much know the one-liners.

I just dug it out and threw it in my flight case, required reading next time I get asigned "coffee captain."

Not sure why, but one of my favorite non-humor quotes:

"The one fellow who is really broke in the air is the one who is out of both altitude and airspeed"
-(Wolfgang Langewieche, Stick and Rudder)

my favorite (paraphrased):

"Take heed of thy airspeed, lest the ground riseth up and smite thee"

"Hey buddy......Watch this!"

Well, maybe those are famous last words.

Never let an airplane take you someplace your mind hasn't been to five minutes earlier.

Better to be on the ground wishing that you were flying than flying wishing that you were on the ground!

Hey Hyper, great book huh? I've read it several times now and still pick it up every once and a while to hit a chapter or two. It's actually in my flight bag right now. That whole book is a good quote.

- Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwinds.

- Speed is life, altitude is life insurance.

- The first thing every pilot does after making a gear up landing is to put the gear handle down.

- Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make them all yourself.

Twintails,
That whole book is a good quote.

Couldn't be any truer.

Would you rather be down here, wishing you were up there...
Or up there, wishing you were down here???

On bad landings.:

"it looks like you ran out of alitiude, airspeed and ideas all at the same time.."

On "floating" down the runway.:

Non-flying pilot..."you want me to ask for lower?"

:)

from "fate is the hunter"
-"fate is a funny thing. It can provide you with an amusing b1tch of a wife, who cannot be trusted as far as the market..."

-"never fly the "A" model of anything"

another set of famous last words...

take her on down another thousand, I know this area real good.

thanks for the one about the guy floating down the runway, I will use that with captain ref + 15 this week!

I don't know where we are but we're making great time!

Hey, lets make a 360 and get the heck out of here!

There are old pilots and bold pilots, but there aren't any old bold pilots.

I think we've all read Fate is the Hunter, so I'll tell you something different instead.

My father taught me:

"There's nothing more useless than altitude above you, runway
behind you, and fuel you left at the gate."

"The only time you've got too much fuel is when you're on fire."

"If it feels like something's wrong, it probably is."

And I came up with this one during a C.R.M. course at my company:

"If your first officer sudden starts addressing you in a very
diplomatic way, you're f_cking something up. Look around and
figure out what it is!"
(And you can quote me on that!)

From the The Caine Mutiny, which I recommend all pilots read right after they finish Fate...:

"If I were you, Commander, I'd worry a little less about making mistakes, and a little more about doing the most sensible and useful thing that occurs to you in any given circumstances."

And finally, my favorite...from Robert Mason, author of Chickenhawk:

"Pilots don't march."

Here's one I just heard tonight

Today's 60 minutes coverage of the first few hours in the bunker under the Whitehouse on 9-11. Pres. Bush says to Cheney

"We're at war Dick we're gonna find out who did this and kick their ass!!!"

Although we are supposed be erudite and quote our favorite aviation literature saying, I'll cite the cheesiest avit movie of all time, Airport 1975: "Once again, skill and daring overcome fear and anxiety."

And, when the FO has turned off the a/p, I quote, "Luke, you've turned off your computer, is something wrong?" (From Star Wars.) I think it's funny, but only ever got one laugh.

When you are very high on short final and tower asks if you can get it down...

You reply "... like a Bonanza full of doctors"

"Well you're high...but, you're fast."

“In an emergency the first thing you need to do is scratch you a$$ and think about it so you don’t do something stupid and make it worse"!

:D "Feather One!" "Which one?"

From Fate is the Hunter

First Officer pulls the gear up before captain breaks ground....

"If you ever do that again I'll write you out of my will."

best one in the book IMHO

Adrian
