Boy, this will force AA and UAL to stop using so many RJ's.

UPDATE - U.S. tries O'Hare curbs to cut air delays
Wednesday January 21, 4:00 pm ET

WASHINGTON, Jan 21 (Reuters) - American Airlines and United Airlines will cut peak-hour flights at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to help ease mounting congestion in U.S. skies, the Transportation Department announced on Wednesday.

AMR Corp.'s (NYSE:AMR - News) American and UAL Corp.'s United (OTC BB:UALAQ.OB - News) "voluntarily" will cut 5 percent of their peak-time operations starting March 4 for six months, officials said.

The new program will cut 62 flights a day at O'Hare. More drastic, government-enforced, measures may become necessary, Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta told a news conference.

In recent months, flight delays at O'Hare -- the nation's busiest airport measured in numbers of flights -- have had a domino effect throughout the U.S. air traffic system, he said.

In December alone, delays at O'Hare rippled through the system to boost the average delay at the largest 35 U.S. airports by more than 10 percent, Mineta said.

Over scheduling of flights and resulting air traffic delays were a looming problem before the Sept. 11, 2001, hijacked airliner attacks slowed demand for U.S. air travel.

"The good news is that passengers are coming back, and security is vastly improved," Mineta said.

"The bad news comes in the form of congestion, and it has hit the hardest at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport," he said.

It will at ORD. They will have to limit the number of flights during peak hours. It did not say a particular size, just the NUMBER of flights. So, if they want to keep people moving throughout their terminals during those popular peak hours, then larger planes will be used. But, the RJs will be moved to other airports with less congestion---like to MIA (for AA Eagle) or maybe SJU. I don't know what UAL will do--but they are shedding ACA fairly soon, so maybe that will ease the congestion right there---just shed some of the ACA city pairings.

Bye Bye--General Lee:rolleyes:

Well, finally some positive news to stop the proliferation of the RJ. Maybe this will force managment to quit replacing mainline flying with RJ's.

As I said, they will just move the RJs to smaller hubs with less traffic. Everyone but the passengers love RJs. (hey, they are better than turboprops on shorter flights---but longer flights over 2 hours are tough--ask any medium sized businessman. oh wait---they do get an aisle or a window....?)

Bye Bye--General Lee:rolleyes:

Its a real shame the Govt. needs to limit flights considering that year after year goes by and they do nothing to put systems in place to allow for the growth of air traffic. I read that the expansion of ORD is being met with opposition because it makes no sense to expand an airport when the ATC system is too inept to handle the increase. This is a real shame!! Why can't the Govt. do ANYTHING right!!

But then again Mayor Jack@ss did the whole system a favor by increasing capacity by bull dozing the GA Airport. Now, I'm fairly certain most people who would have gone to Meigs will go to Midway.... but either way, it didn't help the big picture.

Wonder if this will bring back active talks about the "South Suburban Airport"? Anyone in the Chicago area hear anything about it lately? I know Daley was against anything outside of City limits, but it didn't stop his friends from buying all the land near the proposed site.

What's the new modifications to ORD supposed to be?

I remember it looking something like the ATL layout, or maybe a DFW rotated 90 degrees. I thought someone published somewhere that it could handle 4 simultaneous ILS approaches, plus departures.

good news

Hopefully this will have the supply and demand effect. less supply+high demand=higher prices.

;)

Re: good news

Gee, maybe AA needs to buy another carrier with a centrally located hub to relieve the ORD traffic. And, it sure would be nice if that carrier had a young, fuel efficient fleet af aircraft (like new 717's and MD-80's, and even some 75's and 76's, like AA) with gates and slots in some high yeilding markets like New York, and even a large SJU operation to complement the AA system (or to just buy the competition there and raise prices again). Some International and Hawaii would be nice too. If they do it right, this could solve most of their problems.

Hopefully it will also put to rest all the rumors about SWA and ERJs.

You're funnier than Snoopy!

It's not rumor, it's a fact that WN is looking at the E-class. Have you noticed the mad scramble sale that WN is marketing. It's not just the slow 1st Q, it's LF's that are being squeezed.

You guys are on deck tomorrow for Quarterly and YE numbers, and it will be a quarter of marginal profit. Wait till you see the 1st Q numbers. I'm predicting the first Quarterly loss since 91.

Look for the order.:D :D ;)

i have been watching the South Suburban Airport progress as my plane is parked where the new terminal will be.
Here is the website;

The last land purchase was 11-20-03, not much news lately.

Try using tabasco sauce ....

Southwest Airlines' fourth-quarter profit rose 57 percent as revenue rose 8.3 percent.

Or maybe you just need help with your vocabulary.

mar·gin·al

adjective

1. in a margin: written in a margin

2. small in scale: very small in scale or importance
You can ignore any marginal discrepancies you find.
Like lowecur - try to ignore anything he posts

3. irrelevant: not of central importance or relevance
In what follows, I have ignored everything that is marginal to my main thesis.
Like lowecur, I have tried to ignore his silly thesis.

4. on the fringe: operating or existing on the fringes of a group or movement a marginal group with no political base
Like lowecur

5. very low: at or close to the lowest acceptable or viable limit
a marginal standard of living
Lowecur's real objective is for all pilots to earn marginal pay

6. economics barely covering costs: barely able to cover the costs of production when sold or when producing goods for sale
Completely unlike SWA

Southwest is buying a Mercedes? What about the 3 series?

:)

I think buying Mercedes isn't in the business plan. What kind of crew ratio does it have? Besides I don't think the gates could handle that kind of equipment. It would have trouble getting to decent flying speed. I think a car would have to break Mach to get airborne.

But wait I have stock in that company.

I better flood all the threads with pro Mercedes propaganda.

Excuse me I have some typing to do....

Marginal

It really is kinda marginal when you put it up against pre 9-11 earnings of $154.7 million for the fourth qtr of 2000. It's a profit none the less, but I kinda expected more with the economy rebounding and all!

I hope they do something quick or Herr Dailey will show up one night with his bulldozers at ORD.

Why don't they reopen Meigs? That will relieve some congestion in Chicago..at least at MDW.

The Friends of Meigs Organization is trying to do just that.

I think all of the pavement and concrete may already be gone. Its been a while since I've flown over. Anyone see it lately?
