Can you use the Air Forces aircraft for your ride? The Coast Guard let me use our H-65 and it was the very simple. I just did it in conjuction with a stan check. If it is any consolation, you can pay for a ATP course and then write it off on your taxes(as long as you continue to be a prof pilot).

I did mine in concert with a Qual check in a C-21 in Germany. A lot of guys at Andrews AFB did their ATP at FSI during sim training.

This benefit does exist....I am also looking into it. It is not the GI Bill. This is a one-time benefit that you apply for through the education office....it uses tuition assistance money and not GI Bill money. It is for a certification or licence. There is a dollar amount (total and per credit hour) and it does have to been done through an accredited institution. The reg also states that flight training is prohibited. However, my education office checked into simulator time and it appears that they will approve that. However, again, it has to be done through an accredited university to count.

Anyone know of an accredited university that offers a 737 type?

I heard of a T-1 pilot at Laughlin that had the Air Force pay for or part of a 737 type. He did not use the GI Bill. A few of us were anxious to find out how he did it but he wouldn't spill the beans until he got his type out of the deal. I think he was afraid of somebody blowing the whistle, I still don't know how he pulled it off.

Sounds like you might be referring to the "lifetime" or "hope" tax credit. If so, check out the link (talks about both credits). The education office is correct in the fact that the school must be accredited. The tax credit does not lower your taxable income, but directly lowers the tax that you will pay....either $2000 or $1500 for the year.

A couple of my buds just did the -737type/ATP at HPA. Both claimed on their tax return since the school is VA approved.

I just completed the ATP on Friday with ATP, inc. You can submit paperwork directly to the education officer or send it in to the VA for refunds on TESTING FEES. For me that included $90 each for FE and ATP written, and $350 for the examiner fee. Fill out VA form 22-1990 and you're all set to receive a check for $530.

Loni,

How was the checkride with Rogers Porter?

You can use that Tax credit to any institution that is authorized to accept federal funds ie Financial Aid, VA approved, etc.

Using this tax credit will save you a little cash on the deduction, but nothing near what you would save using the GI Bill if available. Depending on your tax situation the tax deduction might be worthless.

In the late 90's, the USAF used to have a program called "phoenix aviator". Not sure if it is still around. This program required you to stay until 20 years and in exchange the USAF paid for your ATP, FEX, FAA physical, 1 year membership in Air Inc, and supposedly worked with participating majors to get an interview. I was a "phoenix aviator" and completed my ATP and FEX thru ALLATPS at PNS in the Piper Seminole ... and flew my ATP check with the man with 2 last names ... Rogers Porters ... he was OK.
