Govt funding for an ATP

I had heard about a "one-time" education benefit to pay for a "certificate, license, or course." When I went to the Education Office, they said the course or training had to be provided by an accredited institution.

Anyone know if any real schools offer an ATP course that this benefit could be used for? It doesn't appear that ERAU does, and ALL-ATPs is not an accredited institution.

Or is there a loophole to allow it to be used for All-ATPs, or was my Education Office in error?

It's blinking in the top right corner of the page, your GI Bill will reimburse 60% of the 6K. As far as I know there arn't any GI Bill approved ATP courses, the only VA approved courses I found were type rating courses.

I think I'm gonna have to go back to the Education Office to clarify the details on this particular benefit. It's not part of the GI Bill, and I don't think it's VA since it's available to active duty. It's a one-time benefit and has to be used while still active.

I think you've been mislead, I've never heard of a "one time deal" education benefit. I've heard that a DOD pilot can get a commercial ticket by taking the FAA written and showing military pilot records to the FAA. The only education benefits that I know of that can be used for flight training is the GI Bill, and to use it towards flight training the school must be approved by the VA, and you can use it as many times as you want, from commercial/multi/instrument certification to type ratings, until you use up the $32,000. or whatever the GI Bill is up to now.

I think someone has gave you bogus info about this "one time benefit".

Unfortunately I wasn't elligible for the MGIB so didn't look much into it, but I belive you can use it for an ATP. I'd say your best bet is to contact All-ATPS (or whomever) directly and ask them - they would almost certainly know better than the ed office. I've never heard anything about a one time benefit though.

To be accredited for VA or govt programs, the course needs to be Pt. 141. Most 141 schools are eligible, but they must go through a process with the VA that can be lengthy from what I understand. The schools I have worked with do not offer a 141 ATP course because most of an ATP course is ground work, and therefore not worth their time or effort to get approved. An ATP rating really just comes down to experience, the FAA test, and the checkflight. For just the ATP, AllATP's just makes it convenient, and therefore a little more expensive.

Can you use the Air Forces aircraft for your ride? The Coast Guard let me use our H-65 and it was the very simple. I just did it in conjuction with a stan check. If it is any consolation, you can pay for a ATP course and then write it off on your taxes(as long as you continue to be a prof pilot).

I think you have been mis-lead by some urban legend. Unless the AF has some special give away, you are probably thinking about the GI Bill. You basically have the following options to get your ATP...

1. Pay for the whole thing at All-Atps (Approx $1500)

2. Use the GI bill if you have it, and either get a type rating in conjunction with getting your ATP. (6-7K minus 60% off)

3. Use your GI bill if you have it to go to a Part 141 flight school that is VA approved, and do their ATP course. (What ever the 141 hour requirement is minus 60%)

4. Work some slicky boy deal if possible with a Guard Member who might be a DE, and get your ATP with a DE observing you do a check ride in a US Air Force Aircraft.

I just completed the ATP on Friday with ATP, inc. You can submit paperwork directly to the education officer or send it in to the VA for refunds on TESTING FEES. For me that included $90 each for FE and ATP written, and $350 for the examiner fee. Fill out VA form 22-1990 and you're all set to receive a check for $530.
