For anyone interested, Great Lakes Airlines is having an open house for pilot applicants on September 19th at the Crystal Inn in Denver. The chief pilot is supposed to be there along with some people from human resources and some other line pilots. I really don't know why they are having this open house because they don't have any concrete plans to run any more new-hire classes beyond the one that's in ground school now. Perhaps the stack of $30 dollar applications has gotten too short.

What?!

You guys charge an application fee?? Knowing there are no jobs available? Is GLA in that much financial trouble to go and start stealing from all the hopefuls out there? That's completely absurd and no better than MESA.

Q200 F/0. Don't kid yourself you horses a$$. Great Lakes is 1,000,000 times better than Mesa. Hell, instructing in a sim is better than Mesa. Watching the hair grow on my a$$ is better than Mesa. We hate you too, so eat it.

The $30 application fee goes to the company that processes the applications and the Psyc test. It does not go to GLA. There was no app fee prior to starting this system. It is more efficient for the company to sort through the paperwork this way. Just a few clicks on the computer.

The bid packet for October strongly indicates an October class - It lists the instructors and dates instead of the usual "TBA." And as mentioned, there are the beginnings of a mass exodus 'round here.

Did Lakes do any interviewing or hiring last week-end?? Does it look like they will run another class in October??

I've been watching Lakes on Wall Street. Their stock is up almost 50%. Why? I think there will be some very good news by Christmas. It would certainly be more advantageous to get hired now,pay some dues and find out in a year they're a major contender with the other commuters.

Ummm... Crashpad? Please explain to me (using small words of course) how investors in Great Lakes would know about some good news around Christmas? If they already know, isn't that insider trading?

I'm must have missed some big point you made that would have quickly answered my question. So sorry to bother you.

No. .25 to .50 would be a 100% increase.

I stand corrected Yudso, it was a 100% jump.
Beechnut, it's never a bother. I've been watching this stock along with all the other airlines for the past year and noticed this recent change. It literally does absolutely nothing this whole past year and then suddenly jumps, independant of what the rest of the industry is doing. What does it mean? I don't know, but I figure somebody does.
It's a hunch, but combine staying power with plans to hire and a sudden jump in stock price...there you have it.
Why Christmas? That's how long it will take them to get spooled-up for expanded operations if this is what's going on.
While they have'nt announced anything yet, what company does until they're good and ready? So maybe there are some pilots with a choice between company X and Lakes. They like the mountains, but not 1900's. They roll the dice on Lakes to be close to home and maybe get real lucky down the road...upgrade, seniority and bigger equipment. Lakes has been on the down side for a couple of years, but like the stock market, it's due for a rebound. I just think this might be it.

Ugh....

it's sickening to see people begging to wait in line to get treated like crap and call it "paying your dues." Did you guys get your contract worked out or are you still picketing?

Lakers have been in classes at ATA, AirTran, SWA (and several poolies), America West, Alaska (and several poolies), Frontier.... Gosh every major that is currently hiring is hiring Lakers.. and they are heading out from here at a good pace!

gla stock

I would say the reason the stock jumped 100 percent in one day is because some poor sucker bought about 10,000 or more shares for pretty much nothing and the price jumped that much because of the amount of shares. Just remember this about wall street, it all speculative. i.e (devils and angels sitting on your shoulder, hairs on the back of your neck, gut feelings etc.) I have seen some pretty crappy stocks jump 100 percent in a day only to be followed by the company filing chapter 11 or better yet chapter 7 and the stock become worthless in a day. The reason the stock is trading below a dollar is because the company is pure and simply a crappy company.

Sending resume in?

Despite this open house, the GLA web page says not hiring pilots, please don't send anything.

Is this just a failure to update the web page?

Should I send something in?

Thanks
Erik

Piedmont DHC-8 is close on his comment. Watch GLA's volume. It's nonexistant. Prices don't move too much when absolutly nothing is selling. Any move in stock price probably falls between a bid and ask price. I wouldn't put too much weight on the face of a stock price.

No, from what I was told they only hired from the people who showed up in person. I didn't go myself, so that info is second hand.

What isn't second hand is that three of our fixed-wing CFIs are in class now as I type this, so yes they did hire out of this open house.

It remains to be seen how many more will get called. But if you didn't go, then sending something in probably won't help.

Fly Safe!
