After reading other posts on this board I knew this was a mistake. For what its worth I’m about to get laid off in 11 months. My private owner in FL has decided to sell his business and retire. We’re selling the plane this summer/fall. I thought doing contract work might give me exposure to other full time jobs. Oh, and I’m 42.


For the 2 of you who sent PM’s, my sincere thanks. For everyone else I hope you never try to figure out how to pay for 2 kids and a wife with no employment, trust me its no fun.

You would be surprised how many leads, interviews, and jobs actually get passed along here through PMs....if anything its valuable networking.

Sorry to hear of your upcoming layoff..but with decent experience and ratings you wont be unemployed very long. Qualified people are not having a hard time finding work from what I hear, and you have 11 months.

Gruman Fan...as was suggested, get hooked up with Jet Professionals (TEB) and do exactly what you are doing now...networking and communicating with others about your needs.

Contract work and contract workers are a necessary part of corporate flying. That said it can be a challenging way to support a family (insurance, variable income and so on).

Many (if not most) have been unemployed in this industry at some time or another...it is good you have some notice at least to start the search.

Yeah, Falcon Capt and G200 are just young punks looking for a fight. Once they have a couple of years of Grumman G550 flying under their belts like me, their attitude will change...

Grumman Fan--Please don't let this kind of thing get you down. This is a great site for networking. I ended up with my current job because of a layoff with 15 years seniority. I, too, have two wives and a kid... er, I mean, two kids and a wife. (Sorry, I just came back from SLC...) It's just a kick in the nuts when you first start realizing you need to get a new job.

Stick around and don't get discouraged. TC

That was on of the most uncalled for attacks I have ever seen. A whore gives it away and screws up the industry. A contract pilot that cuts rate is a whore.

Am man seeking income by doing a days work for a fair wage is not a whore.

CoffeePilot are you a whore for receiving benefits over your salary?

Its a tough job to support a family in this business, even harder when you pay the taxes,training and insurance.

If you make a go of it good for you. If you charge the local rate or better I support you...."cut rate" and I'm on you "six"!

Gentlemen,

My sincere thanks to everyone who has given me solid advice, especially those who sent leads through a PM. I consider myself fortunate to have 11 months to get moved. My airline certainly didn’t do that for me!

As for Contract Pilots, my company uses one several times a year when someone is on vacation or when we need a 3rd crew member. The daily rate for the V is $1300/day with all expenses.

Again, I appreciate the help.
