I remeber being told that you had to have your 2nd class med to get the GI Bill but today I was reading on the GI web site that you were only required to have the med required for the rating that you are going for.(i.e., Im going for my instrument so I would only need a 3rd class)

Thanks for any info

G.I. bill for flight training

I understand that the test is if your school is a Part 141 operation. You may not be able to use your benefits at a Part 61 school. I never heard that a Second or higher medical was a criterion.

GI Bill expirience

I had to maintain a second class medical while enrolled in any VA approved training. There are part 61 courses at some schools that are approved for the GI bill. Make sure you are in constant contact with the VA liason at your school and have the phone number of the person at the VA that handles your paperwork. They need to be constantly prodded to process your claims in a timely manner or you will go months without reimbursement.

I have never heard of a Part 61 VA approved course. I don't believe they exist. All VA programs are 141, but not all 141 programs are VA-approved.

I do know that you must maintain your 2nd class throughout your program.

Lemme dig around and find a link for ya.

The VA website is skimpy on flight training.

2nd Class

I had to maintain my 2nd when I trained at Comair Academy. No 61 schools approved as of a couple years ago...only 141, which I believe still stands. It took some people only about 3 months to begin getting their bennies....took me a year....that was only after I went to the Atlanta regional office to kick some a$$. Hope it works out for you!
