Few pilots get fired for a single event that doesn't involve bent metal or spilled blood. If he had been previously warned and even given time off, it sounds like he was sacked for insubordination. I'd bet there's even more to it...
 
Usually, any "fired for not wearing a hat" story is the final straw that broke the camel's back. There is probably a paper trail of warnings, base meetings, etc. etc.
 
B747, that avatar is mesmerizing! I think I just stared at it for 5 minutes!
 
There were many other issues with the pilot and he was given every chance imaginable. The hat thing was just the tool the CP used to get the process rolling. Up until the day the pilot actually left the company, he could easily have kept his job.

Won't be asked, that CP has retired and is long gone.

Other than his hat fetish, he was the best CP I've ever had.
