When an individual applies for a position as a pilot for an airline, besides meeting or exceeding the flying qualifications for that particular airline, what other factors determines whether a person gets hired as a 1st officer candidate?
 
Willing to take crap all day from a Capt!!! and doing paperwork not to mention doing the chicks that dont meet his standards!!

You are not Al-queda, and you are not high or drunk during the interview.
 
You have to pass the mirror test. That is where they put a mirror under your nose and if it fogs up you are hired.

Now days, all you need is a pulse and not to mention you have to be willing to work for poverty wages. If you meet that criteria you will be hired. Who knows, you might even get hired without an instrument rating at some of the regionals.:rolleyes:
 
They typically (or at least used to) give a basic instrument written, a psych exam, sometimes a basic sim evaluation and a face to face interview. The reason for the instrument written and sim eval is obvious. I can think of many examples of people who got hired that I honestly can't believe made it past any psych exam. Who knows what they look for in an interview anymore. A lot of the companies used to make sure that you were at least reasonably pleasant to talk to before they locked you in a cockpit with one of their captains for hours on end. From what I've been reading lately, along with the sharp decline in part 121 pay has come a decline in people wanting to get into the business. If you check out the Boyd Aviation Consulting site (take it for what it's worth), one concern the industry will have as time goes on is getting qualified applicants for new pilot positions. In other words....they can't be as picky as they want to be. Let's just hope they start having real trouble recruiting and recognize pay and QOL has to be adjusted upward. Eh...forget it...that's too logical for airline mgmt.

hey yip how do you feel about flying as a career. Would you say its one of those jobs that you can make 100 grand without a college degree. and would you say there is a looming pilot shortage. just kidding, your posts rock. but you MUST "come to the dark side....."

With a total time of 8? I dunno. My buddies at eagle say they're hard up. So, get your time a little higher -maybe 40-45. You're probably golden.

In all seriousness, if you want to get a feeling for what airlines are looking for, there are good resources all over the online world. Try checking out aviationinterviews.com. You can register for free and it will give you an idea of what each airline's interview process is like.

Which makes it a good place for honest answers. Stay away from aviation. That's my 2 cents, and half my paycheck.
