So I currently have my 2016 Carbon Cub SS insured with Avemco for $220k hull. I just called them to see if they would insure my FX3 that I just ordered and was told they have a $200k hull limit on experimentals. So that is obviously not going to work.

So FX3 owners - do you mind sharing who your insurance company is and/or your broker? Would also like to get an idea if folks are willing to share what they are actually paying for insurance if you are willing to share.

For my SS, my premium is $4,070 on $220k, or 1.85% of hull.

I suggest ask your CC dealer for recommendations. They know who to use for CubCrafters. I use Ladd Gardner aviation insurance as my broker. It's the worst part of this deal, insurance. My first year IIRC was 7500, I'm down to around 5300 now with 400K hull value.

Old Republic

Thanks. I'm currently with AIG which had the best price found by NorthWest Insurance Insurance Group.

I wonder if I'm being penalized for age but the premiums went down at last two renewals and I didn't get any younger.

My PA-28 was insured for several years with Old Republic but they either wouldn't quote, or were non-competitive, for the FX-3. Maybe I should try again at next renewal.

Thumbs up for Ladd Gardner. I use them for my NX and EX-3. I'm currently paying quite a but for the EX-3 because of two pilots with low TW time. Hope to make progress on that front this year.

Cool - can you share contact at Ladd Gardner ?

I suggest just email them and start from there. I don't know how the agents are assigned out. I started working with Ladd via email and got handed off to Bob Haag.

I don't think there is any rhyme or reason we'll ever figure out as to the rates. You can fly and try to build time but that doesn't seem to bring rates down much. I think there are a lot of factors involved such as your ratings, time (calendar and hours) in Type that factor in. Your location plays in the equation, hangared or not, your age, hull value, year of your plane (newness) etc. as we all know. The problem we all face is these cubs are stupid expensive and people go out and try to reproduce what they see on YouTube and bend metal early on. A FX-3 was on the list this past week for a bad landing it seems, damage significant. It was one of the first FX-3's so older. We're all going to pay for this, I doubt I'll ever see below 5K/year. It was interesting to hear Trent Palmer in a recent video say he's paying around 3K and I think he went with Clemens (whatever the name is) but we don't know the details of the policy, i.e. hull value, etc. But his Legend Nomad is probably optioned out to be around 500K I'm guessing, not that he paid that.

No doubt that all of these factors play a role. But I've been told that for pilots under 70 years old, there are two primary factors: (1) hull value and (2) time in type. I agree that premiums will never get lower than $5k unless you lower the hull value and essentially self-insure a good portion of the risk.

Old Republic

With Old Republic too. Same cost but 360K hull. Have to check that this coming insurance season. Neil when do you renew? May check back on the deal you get with OR.

June 1st.

OR is also zero deductible, not negotiable, just how they do it.

It's good to collaborate at renewal time. @Tsquared gets his renewal a month or two prior to me using a different broker. Sometimes he uses a company Bob hasn't inquired with so Bob will check per my request as they don't seem to check all of them and then we decide the pro's/con's and decide.

I’ve been using Teri Branstitre from NW insurance for the past 5 yrs and have been pretty happy. [email protected]. (503) 640-6060. The underwriter is Beacon.

Teri found me insurance for my new FX-3 when no one else, including my existing agent, would touch it. I had about 500 hours tailwheel and many different tailwheel types flown.

I was very surprised to hear Neal's premium as it is about 2 k less than mine for a significantly higher hull value.

Hi - I have 400K on my 2025EX3 and paying 12K

TailwindsJJ - I spoke to the Wings folks at GMAG a few years go and they wouldn’t touch my FX3. That said your double my cost on a $350k hull.

you in MN or just your broker?

For anyone quoting insurance please note if you have floats as I think the seaplane deal will raise the premium, but have no first hand experience.

Just got a quote from my broker that I handles my TBM:

“I'm pleased to present the attached quote on your Carbon Cub insurance from AIG. I quoted the hull at $475K and liability limit at $1M/$100K per passenger. Total Premium is $11,027. The rate is 2.2%.”

So it's renewal time, yaye me! Bob emailed me and gave me a quote for Old Republic which was identical to last year's premium. He told me one other came in 2K higher. I spoke with a friend that also has a FX-3 and asked him who he used. I wasn't sure of the etiquette of using a broker, is it okay to get quotes from another broker? So I did that, I went to another broker my friend used and they give you a summary of every quote they receive so you can see. Well, it was interesting as there weren't a lot of quotes for whatever reason. The gist is it seems it's very hard to get 400K hull value coverage from many of the providers as so many are bending metal. It makes sense, many of us in this type of plane are not landing on official airports, we're taking these planes to unknown landing areas and we're paying the premium for that freedom and we're paying the premium for the result of that freedom. I'll keep it at that.

As the premiums were pretty much the same I really didn't want to go through the work of giving a new broker all of the details even though he came in slightly lower than Bob's quote as Bob has all the info and it's just easier for me to stay with the current broker. I did tell Bob that another broker came in lower using USAIG and he apologized that he thought they were not issuing coverage for FX-3's. He did go to them with a hull value 399,998 (not using 400K) for whatever reason and he came in lower so I accepted it. I also got quotes for 350 and 375K. My situation is a little unique as some know and won't get into the details but per chatGPT CubCrafters significant raised prices post 2021 so do you insure for replacement now or base it off of what you paid then? It's a balance as we all know.

Moral is, my renewal is about $400 less this year from last year (around 5500 now vs 5900 a year ago) for 400K hull value which is still painful but nature of this Type. I'm going with USAIG instead of Old Republic. Both are supposedly great but per chatGPT USAIG has advantages and is preferred.

I'll include the chart from the other broker I went to so you can see how few quotes came back. I have no damage or accident history and have ratings from Commercial, Instrument, Multi, etc. and over 3K hours. I did not fly much in the past year so that may play in as I would expect. Who knows. Many of these quotes are from automated systems as I asked Bob, does one's experience ever come into play with insurance companies. I have a military training background, etc. He explained in some cases some training programs help as it seems USAIG does like that but for the most part it's an automated system so it's hard to communicate that.

One of these days I will maybe be rich enough to just get liability.
