Conspiracy Theory
All,
Hello, I used to be a Flightinfo.com junkie...would read all the posts into the wee hours of the night learning more about the airline industry and the great folks in the brother/sisterhood of aviation. As a guy transitioning from the Air Force, I really appreciated the insights of the contributors to the forum and respect all pilots who have chosen to serve the public by providing safe and timely transportation via air travel.
I was fortunate enough to be hired by SWA and started at the beginning of the year. I'm still "wet behind the ears" but am learning every day and will be holding a line next month. I absolutely love the people I work with and the management has proven to be everything you read about.
I was shocked to visit the forum after a few months away--busy studying flows, systems, how to takeoff and land, learning how to make a good PA , and do business the SWA way, only to find the thread that we're now 6 pages into. At first I understood the youthful enthusiasm DH2WN must be feeling and how that must have colored his remarks. But as it continued, I started to feel uncomfortable as if he were speaking on behalf of the SWA pilot group. I was happy to hear the words of wisdom from the "Godfather"--Chase, and as usual he was right on. After he seemed not to heed the Master's advice, I thought that Shagadelic showed him the path to enlightenment. Nevertheless, just about every forum veteran from other airlines and the SWA Dudes you regularly hear from have chimed in to get this young stallion to throttle back a bit and listen to his elders...but without success....this person seems to have no SA.
I finally concluded that it must be a hoax...a conspiracy theory if you will...the "Russian" or "Lowcur" has taken on a new identity and is just providing "flamebait"...as they periodically do to get the forum fired up. If DH2WN is for real, he/she'll soon be in class, consumed by more important things, will get 3 different financial briefings on the airline industry and SWA in particular, become much more humble when surrounded by the pilot group, not have time for this forum for another 4 months, and then take on a new identity.
For the young student pilot thinking about the future...things will be volatile in this industry...but so will most. Many of my high school friends have changed jobs 6-9 times already. You need to do a gut check and decide what you want to wake up and do for a living...what will give you the fire in the belly to enjoy going into work each day? The view from our "office" is always very, very nice. It's not near as stressfull a job as my friends who have professions making comparable incomes. And will the industry be here 10, 20 or 30 years from now--you bet. There are 76 million baby boomers born between the years of 1946 and 1964 who are at their peak income earning years with the desire to travel to see grandkids, family, and far away places. They have the disposable incomes to travel well into their retirements and airtravel is the way to go. What we can't tell you is who the right horse is to bet on now...but what we can tell you is there will always be a race. Remember, it's the journey...not just the destination.
Thanks to all who contribute to the forum. We may get fired up and raz a fellow aviator once in a while, but thank goodness we live in a country where they can feel free to speak and we can give them a hard time about it--go USA...I'm choking up
God Speed
P.S. SWA isn't the little Texas company flying 8 legs a day anymore-old sterotype. In my limited experience, I've flown as little as 2 legs a day, and had one 6 leg day. The average has been 3-4 legs per day...with usually 20-30 minute turns. So our time is used very efficently.
