Looks like the people in Florida are going to be visited by Frances. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ftp/graphics/AT06/refresh/AL0604W5+GIF/310923W5.gif

When I was a TMB, and MYAT, I saw that most private aircraft were parked outside, tied down to cables on the ground.

I can remember when hurricane Bob hit New England. People who had boats in the water had them removed and stored on land, and the insurance companies paid for that so that they would not have a loss caused by the boat left in the water. I would imagine that it would be cheaper for the insurance companies if people left in droves and parked their planes in Texas, somewhere, and don't understand why airplanes owners, in particular, would sit it out on the ground.

I just got back from flying Frances this morning. It's wrapped up pretty well into a formidable hurricane, as every news outlet in the SE United States will tell you. Too early to tell where it's gonna hit but I would NOT wait until the last minute to board up, evacuate, etc. I flew Charley when it came ashore and it was truly sickening to see the storm intensify as much as it did the last three hours before it came ashore.

Once they fly out the Riddle fleet, I'm outta here..

Any damage to the old Riddle fleet from Charlie?

I imagine that they just left the Mooney's out there (have they retired them yet?), untied accidentally.

I worked at an F.B.O. at Victoria Regional Airport in Victoria, Texas. They had a high wind condition one summer, not reported as a hurricane or tornado just a high wind storm; the tech. guys didn't close the hanger doors quick enough and the wind caught up inside the hangar and blew the roof completely off. The aircraft tied down outside where undamaged, not so for the ones parked safely inside. :o

Riddle fleet

I noticed on the Daytona Beach webcams that the fleet is gone today. Anyone know where they flew them too? I haven't been up to our flightline today to see if there are any there but I can't imagine any were flown that far with the limited space we have.

Thanks for the help.

The riddle planes were flown out on Th morning and most were going to Alabama. Oh and we got rid of the mooneys a long time ago...we use arrows now instead.

Alabamastan....
If I was Osama, that's exactly where I'd be hiding. Not a single person looking there for him.

In regards to Frances, good luck to the Floridians. It doesn't look like this is going to be too pretty.

Would anyone happen to know which airport in Alabama they're headed to? Also is there any company at that field that has business with Riddle, or possibly an extended campus?

Thanks again for the help.

I know that Piper used to be in Vero Beach. I don't know if they are still there, but did they get any damage from Charley? Are they likely to get hit by Frances?

Just wondering. Their website appears to be down.

You folks in Florida, take care.

soggy

Just weathered Frances in the Turks and Caicos. I've never seen glass flex that much before. She passed near North Caicos, and slowed before moving on. Most of the other operators down here moved a/c to Jamaica. We've been flying the crews around to sort things out. Man, it was spooky the following morning. No towers, no ATC, no lights, no navaids, no windsocks. We were blessed with no serious injuries or fatalities. Good luck to the Northern Bahamas and Florida.

Answered my own question....

According to the Daytona Beach Emergency Notification website, the planes were moved "to several locations in Alabama and Georgia by university instructor pilots. The Alabama locations are Anniston, Gadsden, Huntsville, and Montgomery. In Georgia, Rome was the destination."

Everyone says I'm so lucky to be away from the snow in Buffalo. Hurricanes are a whole different game. At least with snow it was still pretty much business as usual.

Maybe things are looking up. Frances is now down to a catagoty 2 hurricane with sustaned winds of 105 mph. Its forward speed has slowed to 4 mph, down from 13 mph just 12 hours ago. One TV station was speculating that maybe it's starting to fall apart. Just speculation of course, but that would be a good development if true.

They are still in Vero Beach. Ohio Unversity just put in an order for 7 new Warrior IIIs w/ avidyn (don't get me started on that). We are supposed to get them in April, but if they get hit (and it appears they will get all of it) it may be a year delay.

The storm has been downgraded from "Oh $hit," to "Crap."

Gee it doesn't seem that long ago, I must just be getting old. :)

Anyways heres to hoping something finally destroys McKay Hall. They should sell tickets to those who lived there in the past to watch it get ripped apart.

It will most likely strengthen again. The eye has reformed and the storm is reorganizing. It has also stopped moving and is just sitting about 80 miles of the coast. The eye has reformed at 70 miles wide and is shrinking, meaning the storm is strengthening. The pressure has dropped almost 8 mb since last night, which is some serious possibilty for getting back to category 3 quickly. If it doesn't make landfull until tomorrow morning like they are expecting, it has plenty of opportunity to become an 'oh sh*t' storm again. The thing is over 1000 miles wide and is considerably bigger (size not intensity wise) than Andrew. I got a few friends there so we'll see how they pull through. I'm more worried about the 10-20" of rain that is expected to fall on already fully saturated land in central florida.

My parents are over by Stuart, they lost power around 11AM today. I am up in SW orlando and we have been getting some bands for the past 3 hours. Did you happen to see Geraldo Rivera on FNC. They have him tied down with a rope so he does not blow away. My wife and I are on the ground laughing at him trying to report from FLL.

I agree with Mckay Hall, but that thing has with stood quite abit! I just wonder if our hangar doors will make it...the doors were almost blown down with Charley.
