This could qualify for a "dumb question" but bear with me. We all know of the extreme high times required to gain a regional job in the states but I've heard that other countries in Europe, etc require fewer hours to get on. Is there any truth to that? Anyone know resources to find more information?

High times it takes to get on with a Regional???? What the Heck do you consider high time?? 1000 tt , 200 ME time?? Thats high time?? Foreign Carriers usually use Abinito training form start to finish- high wash out- and you have to get all you JAA license to get there- if you haven't noticed most of the Foreign pilots come over here to get jobs - because its loads easier here - consider yourself lucky you have been born in the US - dude you won the lottery - people would give up everything to be able to work here in the States- suck it up- look at the history of the airline market - 97-01 was a very strange blip of low time pilots getting hired - trust me it ain't any easier in foreign countries - most regional pilots spent 5-6 years instructing and hauling boxes to get a job at the regionals before the blip- now everyone thinks a job is owed to them when they have 500 hrs total time- MAX
 
Dude, 1000 hours to get to a regional....is that it....awwman, heck, I'll just go out and get that this weekend.
You mean you can't get a job with a regional with only 500 hours? You're kidding. You mean I might have to flight instruct and fly freight for several years before I'll be ready for the regionals? You don't say???
Am I really lucky to live in the US? I always thought i'd be better off in a country like Iraq where I'm tortured for my beliefs.

OR As#hole- you could do it the way I did - go fly for the military and serve your country and stop bitchin how tough it is to get into the united states airline business - Or the other choice is - just shut your mouth and pay your taxes and sit on the sidelines- and cry about not having a flying job- infact - yeah I think you should try another country -- and by the way Bl*w me!--- MAX

moderator, you can remove this thread because most of these guys are going to see it in a pessimistic fashion and not offer any constructive advice.
 
Yeah europeans hire low time pilots. If you can make it throgh ab-initio training. I got hired, but I got lucky (was an instructor for a european major stateside). Wife started on MD-11 with 220 TT. When they come out of their cadet program, they are capable of it. Most of my FAA students would not have been able to make it through that course at 220 hrs.
However, the market over here is up and down. I got hired into a pool, expecting a class date within a couple of months. However, there are boatloads of guys who have shedloads of time and squat to show for it. Ryanair will take almost anyone who breathes, providing you can cough up the 18K Sterling to pay for the 737 type they require.
