We seem to have a plethora of people here who love to grill, so it seems like a decent place to ask. After all flx757 got me a sweet "axe".

So once again, got about $500 to spend on a grill. Seem like Weber has some decent ones, as does Vermont (?). Saw both at the Home Depot.

But hey, we got some connisseurs here, so let's hear it, what would you get?

I bought one a couple of months ago that doesn't use lava rocks.

I've been disappointed with it. The heat isn't evenly distributed and flare-ups are a problem.

I wouldn't recommend one like it.

How about both a grill AND a smoker? I think Falcon Capt recently purchased a smoker that he likes...

I have a Weber Genesis® Propane Grill, a Weber Charcoal Kettle and a Brinkmann Horizontal Smoker...

If you are looking for a gas grill, I recommend the Weber Genesis®, just make sure you get one with the stainless steel Flavorizer Bars®... Also the one at Home Depot used to have cast iron cooking grills, they are really nice, BUT they require a ton of maintenance to keep them from rusting... an easier way is to get the stainless steel cooking grates...

Also check True Value Hardware stores, they carry Weber also, are usually the same price as Home Depot and they will build and deliver it for you, usually for free...

Stainless Steel lp gas grille from Sams Club is around $550 now. I have seen many of similar quality and size from $900 to almost $2000. I've owned mine for three years now, and easy maintenance. You have to assemble it yourself, and that will take from two to three hours, and at one point you will need another body to help you lift and slide the cast aluminum fire bowl into position. Take a look at it at any Sam's club. They usually have one assembled and on display.

For the greatest grilling expierience(ya I know I spelled it wrong) I highly recommend DCS Grills. They are built like a tank, resemble "Viking" or "Wolf" Industrial Kitchen grills, but hold up great in the outdoors. The stainless stel is indestructable, much better than other models. I have had a fire burn for 30 minutes and stain my grill (Neighbor was watching it), but with some steel wool and olive oil it cleaned right up. These things freaking rock, I cook my thanksgiving turkey on it every year! try using ur sam's club rotisserie for that! (PS they cost a ton, and when I say mine i mean my old man's!!!:) :D
He did have a tear in his eye when he got it for father's day...

I agree with Bart, Big Green Eggs are the best smokers but they are a pain for burgers and dogs when compared to a propane grill.

Having said that there are cheaper alternatives to the BGE.

I am partial to this one Linky .

You can get these style cookers to amazing temps, I've had my Grill Dome up to around 975 (from lump charcoal)for searing steaks. The heat radiates around the interior sealing the flavor a la Ruth's Chris style. Cooked pork butts for 8 hours, the temp control is second to none. I highly recommend checking out either one, quality is first rate.

It is funny how BBQ comes up on this forum. My two greatest passions.

After many turmoils in flying I am tired of being dependent on the airlines for income. So I started a secondary business. My wife and I have been working on this for the past 4 months and things are starting to come together. What is the business you ask. Well if you are into grilling....and I mean seriously into grilling we build outdoor kitchens. Starting off with a unique charcoal grilling system. It is extra work than your plain old gas grill, but entertainment value of sitting outdoors cooking some food, drinking some beverages, and entertaining friends is all part of our experience.

This outdoor kitchen does have a gas grill incorporated in the mix for a quick burger. Plus it has a burner to boil a pot of water to make some corn on the cob and a sink on the other side to prepare all your vegetables. In the center of the gas grill and the charcoal grill sits a fire-pit large enough for people to sit around and roast marshmellows.

We will have a web site up and running hopefully in the next two weeks. (our web designer isn't all we expected) Initially we wont be building the outdoor kitchen ourselves (we will sub contract that out) but we will give you plans to build it if you buy the charcoal grilling system. For some pics PM me and I will email them.

Be forwarned, if you are not a serious BBQ kind of guy this project probally will not work for you. If you enjoy sitting out by a fire grillin some food this project will be right up your allie. Initial cost is going to be somewhere around $300-$400. We really havent sat down and figured that part out yet.

PM me if anyone is interested or even come on by if you are in the Memphis area.

Getcha a New Braunfels. Sturdy and solid - use it as a smoker and a grill.

Don't get anything that burns gas or has lava rocks. That ain't a grill.

New Braunfels

For a plain gas grill: we've got a Vermont Castings. It cleans really easily, and it can cook up a storm. We mainly went with the Vermont Castings grill because we've had Vermont Castings heat in the house (wood heat only) since I was a wee baby boy. After 23 years it is just now starting to wear out (and a new Vermont Castings stove is on the way).

There's nothing more annoying than grills that break. The Vermont Castings grill we got is a tank. A nice, shiny stainless steel tank :)
