Just curious what my esteemed FI brethren do without the luxury of crew meals and are burned out on fast food runs at the airport.

PBJ and apples/oranges - I make 4 or so (half sandwhiches) for a 4 day trip. Wrap them in Al foil and they keep fine. If it is an early trip (am starts) I can eat the orange one th first leg then the apple and PBJ for an early lunch then if your in the hotel by mid afternoon just do dinner at 4pm.

On a 4 day I take

4 PBJ
4 apples
4 oranges

Strong Bags lunch box. It keeps food cool for about 12 hrs. Get one of the headache bags from walmart, You have to fill it twice a day but well worth it. You can carry days worth of food. All home cooked, left overs. etc....Its kind of a pain at first but you get used to it and never have to eat fast food. You can also eat when you feel like it and not during 30 minute turns.

+1 on the Strongbags cooler. I put leftovers in tupperware and just dump ice from the galley(or hotel ice machine) right into the bag and it keeps fine all day long. I can usually fit 4-6 postcard sized tupperware containers in the cooler section of the bag.

I mix up some rice, chicken, spinach, veggies into a container and find that travels well for several days.

Did military charter this week. Military guys ate sandwiches then cheeseburgers and snacks. For the last leg home empty, we had steak and shrimp with potatoes and vegetables or stuffed chicken on rice with warm roles and a nice spinach salad. That was for flight crew/FA's/mechanic/ and the load planner. Kinda felt guilty but it was a 2 hour flight after a lot of sitting and waiting on these guys to unload their bags...

To be clear, we were catered with cheeseburgers for the military guys enroute and the sandwiches were for their pre-boarding snack. The company actually catered our crew meals with the china etc. We did not hose over the military guys/gals. We treated them with all the respect they are due for the job they are about to perform. Was just surprised when the crew meals were served on the way home.

". . . and some dry white toast."

I prefer freezing the food itself. It will thaw after the first day but then I have room for the ice bag.

I get fed twice....and there's Cheese and Cracker plates and Sundaes.....

Seriously, get ya some almonds, walnuts, dried blueberries throw em in a ziplock and that'll last ya until your next food break. I always got some Beef Jerky handy when in a pinch.....

Then again my BF% is only 8 so.......(what a crock....)

Get a Food saver vacuum system. You can cook whatever (chicken and rice ...etc) vac it and it will keep without refrigeration for a couple days.

Luggage works cooler.

4 day trip, I usually take
3 bags of instant oatmeal
3 Yogurts
12 slices of bread in the disposable zip lock tubs (4 slices a tub)
1 lb turkey or low sodium lunch meat
1/2lb sliced cheese
Peanut butter
Jelly
Spicy Mustard
6 zip lock bags of chips or pretzels

About 20 bucks worth of food.

Sometimes I Pack up cookies or leftover pizza I have at the house.
That is enough to get through a 4 day trip for me.

I still go out and eat if the crew is fun and my finances allow (back on 1st year pay again)

I went from 195lbs to the 140's by packing food and running. The amount of calories is an average restaurant/fast food meal is really eye opening.

That's an idea I hadn't thought of . . . I quit eating fast food almost 20 years ago . . . so I'm always looking for a way to get good, regular meals on a trip.

I usually hit one of those "Bistro Deli" places in ATL (T,B,E Concourses) and also carry fresh fruit, trail mix, and soups and shakes that don't need refrigeration. Plus single-malt Scotch and cigars for layovers.

PS., Tunafish reeks in the cockpit!

That's all you eat for 4 days?!? That meal plan looks like the starvation plan:D

2 whole fried chickens and a coke.

" two honkies came in here dressed like Hasidic diamond merchants...they look like they from the CIA or something"

" what they want to eat? "

"The tall one wants white bread toasted dry with nothin on it The other one wants FOUR whole fried chickens and a coke.

" oh snap..the Blues Brothers"

............The Blues Brothers! They still owe you money fool!

Seriously, I just bought a Strong Bag. Works great... A little more room than the E bag with a tougher material...... Now I can fit all the cheez whiz I want for my trip.

Ha, oh those Sundaes are soooo good. I like our Soups too! Have not found one I do not like. I even liked the Lettuce Bisque we had a few months ago. Needed a little salt, but that was it :D

In reality many of the domestic airports have something different these days so Fast Food is not as "bad" for you as it used to be. I generally grab a wrap, or a salad. In LGA the DAL food court is awesome. You must try one of the burgers and one of their salads. I have been very impressed with it. The discount is nice too.

If I ate burgers and fries every day I would barf.

On the MAC Charter stuff, the crew meals we board are the standard International BE meals, whereas the military loads something much less. I had their beef stew a few months back and frankly, it was darn good. I let one of the airman have my meal. Poor guy was licking his cops like my dog does. I could not refuse him his first good meal in 12 months! :D

I used to slug around a cooler, but frankly with the reroutes to International Destinations and locations of our layover hotels, it is just more of a pita than anything. I spend my per diem, and enjoy a good meal every now and then.

OK, I've always wondered. "Four whole fried chickens..."

Does this mean as-in four whole chickens like you see rotisserie-style at the grocery store, but deep-fried? I don't think I could eat one whole chicken, much less four of them. Could John Belushi really eat four whole fried chickens, and a coke? That's a ton of chicken, probably 4 to 6 pounds worth of meat alone.

It gets the job done. You don't need much to survive.

I had very poor eating habits, and still have some (I like candy and cookies). I ended up having BP issues and needed to make a change.

I was a huge Qdoba fan...I ate it a few times a week when we had one in the airport. A burrito there is about 2500 calories! About what a normal person SHOULD eat in a day, all in one meal.

A 12in Italian sub from subway is like 1900.

Mix in soda/pop and chips and it really adds up.

And hell it saves money. I use my per diem to go out with friends at home or party with a good crew.
