Flying to Reno in September for the Air Races in my '46 Aeronca Chief. I won't be winning any races myself, I guess, what with the 80mph cruise speed. Anyone else planning to go this year? Where do you normally fly in to and park your plane? I heard it's pretty much impossible to fly in to Stead during that time. Is there a grass strip nearby that I could use? Thanks in advance. Fair winds and blue skies.

there are no grass strips in Nevada because Nevada is one giant rock. Grass does not grow naturally, at any place. Stead is not open to the public during the races and maybe even a few days before them. Reno Intl has parking which is a 20 min. drive from Stead.

Never flown in, but I grew up in Reno and looked forward to every September. I don't even think you can fly into Stead unless you're part of the races/show or are based out of that field. Reno/Tahoe Int'l (RNO) is probably best but that will be incredibly busy around race time. Make any arrangements you can as early as possible.

If you're into warbirds, Reno's probably the best airshow weekend around. Even if you aren't it's about as good as it gets this side of Farnborough.

I live in reno and teach out the Reno tahoe international airport. It does get very busy and space is limited. You can usually always get a spot to park for the weekend but if you are planning to leave early monday after the races there can be a long delay getting in the air. A couple of options it to fly into Carson city, Truckee, or Beckworth nervino but getting to reno from those spots can sometimes be a problem. I would just flying into reno as early as possible and not leave until monday afternoon.

Speaking of Reno...I heard she has a bush that would knock your aunt Connie's socks off.
