Well I worked in an Auto Body Shop for a year right out of college... of course that was back in 1990-1991 when the economy and industry were about like they are now...

My first flying job was as a CFI about a year after graduation...

Good Luck!

I had flying jobs while in college. I instructed and flew fire patrols during the summer. Also did some other contract work. Then flew charter after college. While I didn't fly a great deal while in school, I did remain current and built up time. Which is the currency in this profession, at least early on. There are many different type of jobs out there. Some good. Some not so good. It depends on your area, career goals and experience level.

I got a 135 job while i was starting my last year of college. I had to fight for it like crazy. It took a lot of showing up in person and following up, I was afraid they would realize I only had one suit. And this was right before the industry started to get bad. Good timming I guess.

I would say that you can expect to flight instruct for your "first" job in aviation- seems to be the norm but not always...

Alot depends on your location and the "need" for pilots in your area when you are job ready

meet as many pilots as you can from your area and you never know where "networking" can put ya- ! !

Jobs out of college

I'd just say that you should be happy to get any job out of college. And no matter how bad a job it is it will be a good job, especially if it puts hours in your logbook and you learn something from it.

In the summer before my senior year, I got a banner-towing gig on the Jersey Shore (first flying job). With a little time built up, I scored a part-time aerial photography job while I finished school, in addition to some part-time banner towing for football season (this was before 9/11).

A couple days after I graduated, I somehow fell into the freight job I have now. It was pretty much dumb luck and fortunate timing.

Networking had a lot to do with the aerial photography and cargo jobs - you can't have too many contacts in aviation.

You too?
I was another lucky '90 Grad/new CFI. FBO line service, loaded 727/DC8 Freighters, and chucked bags for a major carrier. Then, when I got lucky, I flight instructed part time for a year before going full time. Then, when I got even luckier (after a few years) I got a freight job in a C210.

The late '90s grads don't realize how lucky they were to be hired into the RJs right out of college. That was a fluke. Welcome back to the world of the normal.

I got a job the a week after i graduated flying a 1994 B58 Baron. Held that job since Dec of 2001 and am quiting in August to become an air traffic controller.

I lucked out and found an instructing job 3 days after I graduated college (April 02). It's getting tight though, I have friends who I graduated with who still can't find a flying job. Most are working the line at airports, and getting discounts on airplane rentals. But then I have some very lucky frieds who knew the right people, and went straight to the RJs out of college.

Hang in there

I Flew for the Military for 9 years active duty - I think they are still in business and hiring- if you need a point of contact - drop me a line--Max
