It was officially announced today. One more obstacle to a CBA removed. Congrats to the MEC for a job well done!

Here is an excerpt:

. . . We are very pleased to announce that on Friday, July 25, 2008, the matter of CANPASS as a condition of continued employment was satisfactorily resolved between the parties. While management may still require pilot applicants to have CANPASS authorization prior to being hired, or to obtain it by the end of the one year probationary period (to be included in the Collective Bargaining Agreement), once the probationary period has been completed, a pilot who loses CANPASS authorization will not be placed on an involuntary LOA, disciplined or discharged for doing so, so long as the pilot makes a good faith effort to maintain CANPASS and/or obtain CANPASS re-authorization. Pilots who do lose CANPASS must inform management as soon as reasonably possible and keep management informed of their efforts to obtain CANPASS re-authorization. . .

I hope this bodes well for the pilots who were "Riffed"

I think some misdemeanors as well. I think you can lose authorization even if you are not convicted.

The real kicker for some guys is that there doesn't seem to be any statute of limitations. If you were stupid 20 years ago - no CANPASS for you!

So what happens if you "lose" CANPASS? Does that mean you're banned from Canada?

The only thing CANPASS does is to let the holder clear at any airport even if customs is not there. As I understand it though ALL people on board must have it. I think FLOPs has one or two owners with CANPASS.

Although they need the info from all passengers, I think only the lead has to be Canpass approved.

Most (if not all) of the FLOPS crews who were fired, never had Canpass authorization, for whatever reason, but I am pretty sure none were felons. At least one had worked for the company almost 10 years before this became a requirement and he lost his job! Not really a nice way to treat a long time employee, especially when it affects probably less than 1 in a 1000 flights.

Getting a felony on your record, or not following the Canpass rules while exiting or entering Canada.

I have heard that some non felony convictions in the US are considered a felony in Can. So if you got a Public Intox(misdemeanor in us) 20 years ago and Canada finds out, they will deny your entry.
