What are the qualifications for Aircrew Training Instructors? Are these classified as flying positions (i.e. do they have the same requirements as the pilots in terms of hours)?

Northwest, I believe, used to hire Associate Training Instructors with just a Commercial and Multi. (not sure if they are still doing this).

Anyone have any more information on these positions?

It depends on the company. Most of the time the guys and girls that teach at an airline or training center have some connection to aviation. Some may have been former military where they taught similar subjects or they may be commercial pilots or even retired pilots or pilots who have lost their medical.

At USAirways the ground school instructors were a combination of the above. At Flgiht Safety Boeing ( Alteon ) they were mostly retired military or airline pilots. When Boeing spun off the simulator training portion of it's business to form Flight Safety Boeing we took the ( former ) ground school only instructors and typed them in the model of aircraft and then taught them how to teach sim. There was a fair amount of talk that they wouldn't be up to the task, but as most were former military/airline they did a great job and continue to do so today.

At American Eagle, our flight instructors are all qualified line pilots who still hold seniority on the pilot's seniority list. Most of our ground instructors are as well. A few of our ground instructors are not line pilots, and were hired off the street. As far as I know all of these types who were hired off the street have previous ground school teaching experience, most in airline ground schools. These people were all furloughed from other airlines I believe. I am not sure what their flight experience is. I hope this helps.
