Is the US flag required to be flown on the side of a US airliner?

Curiously, like cable news channels, who compete to see who can fit the most american flags on their screen, Airlines in America seem to be in competition to see who can have the most red, white, and blue and other variations of the flag on the side of their aircraft.

Of course, American and US Airways are obvious. And just to make sure that no one confuses a North American plane for a Mexican or Canadian registered aircraft, they painted a flag on the fuselage and the tail (in addition to the familiar sticker near the registration number). USA 3000 has the stripes from the flag on the fuslage and tail.

Less obvious is Delta. They have the red, white, and blue theme, and a steaming flag on the tail. So no one questions their patriatism, their registration flag is a little bigger than most. Delta elected to go with a darker blue and no white, but they put a huge flage on the back of the fuselage. JetBlue has no red and a very little flag, which would lead one to believe that they don't support the USA, this must be some sort of communist airline.

Southwest has only a small American flag, but have airplanes with the flags of Texas, Maryland, California, and New Mexico painted on the side. I'm not sure what they are trying to convey, but I would watch out for a secession attempt by these states.
