Mgmt screws up, blames it on the workers knowing full well it's their own fault, and then ask those same workers to work for free to undo the mess. This is worse than battered wife syndrome.

From USA Today.com

Feds slam US Airways for holiday meltdown: A federal investigation found that poor planning and sour labor relations helped lead to the "holiday meltdown" that snared tens of thousands of US Airways' passengers around Christmas, according to both The Associated Press and Reuters. The report by Kenneth Mead, Transportation Department inspector general, said that while US Airways managers were aware of potential staffing problems, they tried to alleviate the situation by paying other workers overtime — something that "ultimately did not work." The airline initially blamed a higher-than-normal absentee rate over the holiday, but the federal report disputed the US Airways' claim that sick calls were abnormally high. "The real problem was the inadequate level of available flight attendants to cover for sick calls or other absences," investigators concluded, instead attributing the snafu to staffing reductions made to cut costs. The report also found that Christmas delays on all carriers were more widespread than at any time in recent years, USA TODAY reports. One airline that got off lightly was Delta affiliate Comair. The inspector general's report found that airline's holiday glitch — a computer shutdown that grounded nearly all of the Comair's flights between Dec. 25-28 — was beyond the airline's control. Hahahaa!

I'll tell you who really needs to be slammed... the **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** government, for putting EXORBITANT amounts of taxes on tickets. Maybe if some of that was alleviated, it might mean more $ for the airline. And just maybe, US Airways wouldn't have all 12 year pay Capts. making $125/hr for the 737/A320.

Your right! The government does need to place blame on itself, but its not for taxing the tickets, its for Keeping USAIrways on life support for this long.
Someone pull the plug, your bringing us all down.....................

US Airways got a $125 million investment from Air Wisconsin. Note that one of the conditions for that deal was Air Wisconsin had the right to operate 70 CRJs under the US Airways Express banner. Why? Just in case the United Express 70 CRJ flying goes to some other bottom feeder, um, i mean, a "more competitve" regional airline.

US Airways needs one more big investment from another company for a simliar amount as above. With that, they will slowly emerge from bankruptcy.

The government is keeping the plug in for US Airways, yes. And the way it seems, if I was a bettin' man in Vegas, I'd bet that US Airways will be around for time to come.

And all this coming from someone flying a Lear?

How is this bringing you down or are you just flapping gums?

Just to clarify, 12 year captain pay is top of scale, however we have NO 12 year captains here. It takes about 20 years to hold Captain. Anybody with 12 years (or 15 years for that matter) is furloughed !

I meant that the max pay is at 12-th year mark. I think I've heard that the most junior Capt. has at least 20 years seniority, but you say that someone with 15 years seniority has been furloughed??? Geez :(

I didn't know it went that far back. So I'm assuming the most junior F/O has been there at least 16 years?

Most junior pilot at USAirways was hired July of 1988.

I've always been a proponent that UAIR would survive. The amount of investment needed to make this co viable is at a minimum $1B. I don't think any investor in their right mind would put up any less and believe that the airline has a chance to survive in the next year. With oil approaching $55. and the mgt boondoggle on Christmas, it is inconceivable that even another $500M would last until the end of the year.

The ATSB has put a minimum cash balance requirement of $325M. My guess is UAIR has close to $500M with the AW investment of $75M on 3/1/05. Another $25M will be forthcoming on 4/1/05, with the remaining $25M paid in Sept sometime. If no white knight(with large purse strings) shows up on the reorganization date of 3/15, then I believe the judge will have no choice but to advise shareholders that Chapt 7 will be in order shortly.
