It's certainly nowhere near as important as the published qualifications (degree being one of them) or the personal recommendation of a FedEx pilot.
How about a rec from a (possibly dubious) former senior management type? And how do I contact someone in the company (pilot) with whom I've lost contact?

And are they 100% on the degree? (I didn't finish due to family problems).

Thanks!

Lrjet55,

If you have competitive times and you have a connection (ie. someone to walk a resume for you or give you a recommendation), your chances are just as good as a military guy in the same position. My class was 3 military, 5 civilian and the class that just started this week was 50-50 I think. Hope this helps.

Training Info?

P3tarbaby, for those of us waiting on a class date, what is the training like (one week indoc, two weeks academics...). Also, I read on this sight that the sim training will be in Dallas. Can you confirm that?

Bamaboy

Bama,
First week and a half is Basic Indoc (company stuff, benefits, union, ops, etc,) then about 2 1/2 weeks of systems and systems trainers (lots of studying, fire-hose effect) followed by an FAA Oral. I've been there since 19 July and just finished my Oral yesterday. Next couple of weeks are more trainers (procedures) followed by sims and a sim check the first or second week in Sept. Should be IOE complete toward the end of Sept. I don't have the schedule for September yet so I don't know that far out yet.

As far as Dallas for sims...we aren't going there but I have heard rumors that they may start due to current training demand (upgrades) and new hire classes (also heard class sizes may go to 12...definitely not confirmed, just a couple of instructors talking amongst themselves). Bottom line...nothing for sure, just rumors for now...and I am certainly not privy to anything special, just the chatter I hear in the cafeteria...so take it for what it's worth. Hope this helps.

Did either of you gusy have the sit down chat with Jack Lewis before your interview?

Also, how expensive is it to put yourself up in Memphis?

Interview odds

Lrjet55: I think that somebody has given you the wrong impression. You do NOT need face time with the SCP to get called for the interview. That certainly wouldn't hurt, it is not a requirement by any means.

I had a friend meet me at the outstation for dinner a year and a half ago and the SCP just happened to be jumpseating home on that flight. I introduced him to my buddy who was in the application system and a year later when they started interviewing again several of his sponsors and I went back to the SCP and reminded him about how well-qualified that guy was and that he would be a great fit at FedEx. A few months later he got the call for an interview.

I have another buddy who I went into the SCP's office on behalf of a few months ago and he had what has been defined as a "heavy hitter" go in on his behalf as well. He also got a call for an interview. The "heavy hitter" is simply a 10th year MD-11 FO instructor who happens to be on good terms with the SCP. By the way, I am just a second year (just starting my third) Boeing FE, a "no-hitter" if you will. I'm sure that the impact of both of us going in on the guy's behalf helped tilt the scale in his favor. Would just one of us have done it? Don't know, didn't want to take that chance.

So we know what works; the more guys who are willing to go into the SCP's office on your behalf, the better your chances are of getting an interview. I walked one other resume in, and that pilot hasn't been called yet, and the SCP made it clear that I had brought him enough business from my old outfit. I understood him loud and clear, I and will have to wait some time before I offer up another rec.

I have flown with other pilots who were hired during the postal contract push who didn't have any internal recs at all, and I suspect that when things start to flow a bit more you will find more people getting called in without the recs. They seem to really like regional 121 operators in general and Memphis based regionals in particular (just a simple observation, no emperical data to back that up).

If you want an interview you need to meet the mins, apply, and UPDATE often. The importance of updating regularly can't be overstated either. They like to see continued interest in the company and progression at your current job, like any other company would. And of course, if you are lucky enough to have a sponsor (or several), ask them if they would take the time to stop in and talk to the SCP on your behalf. Its kind of a pain to catch him at a good time and may take several attempts, but it is certainly worth the effort, in my humble opinion. At the very least have all of your sponsors or anybody you know submit an electronic recommendation on your behalf as well.

I've only been here a couple of years and don't have much experience with the hiring process, but I have seen these events unfold with my own eyes. Keep the faith, apply, update and be ready when (if) the call comes. Track down any and everybody you know and have flown with who works here and convince them that you are the kind of pilot that FedEx needs on the line so they can pass along the info to the hiring folks. Then sit back and let things happen, because it will still take some time (as you already know I'm sure).

Best of luck to you.

hate to burst your bubble....

I am a new hire still in training. I heard it from the horse's mouth (K.D.) last week that this face to face thing with J.L. is pretty much a requirement. She said J.L. really wanted it this way, to personally approve everyone. She said you have to go through his admin assistant and get an appointment. I guess he likes to do them on Wednesdays, but has some limited time on other days. And, as of a few days ago, the next appointment available was for the first week of September. (I am trying to get a buddy on here, so I kind of in this up to my elbows.)

Now, I wouldn't say that if you didn't get an intro to J.L. it was hopeless, so everyone, keep on plugging. But just passing what my experience has been lately.

Good luck.

OK- an update! JL has to approve you, but face to face not required. If you have a heavy hitter he will take that into consideration. But definately no "randoms" getting pulled from the applications.

Not scoffing the current requirement, but if we start hiring 24/month pretty soon ALL the CPs are going to be too busy to see everyone. Want a fall interview? Odds are you need a good sponsor. If the hiring continues, perhaps some of that may wane in the future.

No fact here...just thinking out loud. You can't get hired, however, if you don't apply and press.

Must be really new

Well I don't have the first hand info that Purpandorange does, but I do know of a guy coming to interview next week who hasn't had a meeting with JL, but I guess its possible that things have changed. I do think that in order to get the call JL has had to pull your name from the list, but I am surprised that he would require a face to face prior to even getting an interview. Hopefully he will be really busy the next few months so that we can get lots of folks into the school house so I can get off reserve.

Thanks for the info Purpandorange.

I too spoke with KD, and yes JL has too approve those who are interviewd, but he doesn't have to personaly meet them! He is basically screening resumes and letters of recs, and determining who gets called!

P3tarbaby - thanks for the info.

Lrjet55 - I did not have a face to face with anyone. I was very fortunate to have a very heavy hitter put in a plug for me, so it sounds like USNFDX' info is on target (JL not meeting everyone, but determining who gets called from the resume/references). No direct knowledge here, just my $.02.

I heard today that we bought four Varig MD11's and the official announcement should be out soon. I'll believe it when I see it.

Lrjet55,

I interviewed in Sept '02 and did not have a face to face with JL. I believe he has had the final say all along as to who gets called. As far as housing goes, there are plenty of crash pads available for around $200 +/- $50 per month. Just check out the bulleting boards in any of the Fedex training buildings. You may even get an offer here, I had three people PM me asking if I was looking for a place. You can always do the hotel thing until you find something but the $$ add up quickly. If you want a crashpad room to yourself, you can find those as well but you'll pay more...just depends what you want. Seems like there are alot of pads in Germantown near the Hacks Cross sims as well as south of the airport in Mississippi (Southhaven, Horn Lake, Olive Branch). PM me if you want more info.

Night Flyer,
I heard the same thing a couple of weeks ago about the Varig MD11s but I heard they were looking at more than four (something like 11-13). Who knows...I'll believe it when it's parked on the ramp and painted purple.:)

The $50.

Well, at least he knows someone...that's a start. I don't know anyone at FedEx and it's difficult to ask someone that you don't know to sponsor you.
That said, I don't feel that the $50 is "wasted" because my name is in the hat and my qualifications are competitive. A wise and happily retired airline pilot once told me that the only people who don't achieve their goal to be an airline pilot are those that quit trying. It's a tough place to be, but I'd really like to be laughing too!

Best of luck and keep the faith,

G4

It doesn't even have to be painted purple, look at the old United DC-10 and the American MD-11 we had floating around the system for a while that didn't get the FedEx paint job, and we were using it anyway.
