As a new hire and during recurrent training you are MEM based and are responsible for your own room and transportation since that is your base.
I upgraded to the MD11 based at LAX. While I was in training I was still "technically" MEM based until I completed training so I was responsible for room and transportation. The training department was in full swing at the time running 4 MD11 crews a week. To relieve some sim time in MEM 1 crew, my captain and I, from each class was sent to ANC for the sim and checkride phase. Airline tickets, rental car, hotel and per diem was paid by the company for "off site" training.
Once activated to the LAX base, anytime I have to go to MEM for recurrent training everything is paid for by the company and considered "off site" training. There are sims in MEM and ANC so this situation only applies to LAX MD11 and SPS A300 pilots.
