Just heard a rumor about a MD-11 tailstrike in MEM a few weeks ago... Male pilot this time...

Hey Freddie, what's your hangup with FDX? Why do you keep trashing us. Did you get rejected by FDX? Are you an insecure wannabe?

Rumor has it that it was an autoland gone bad, and the crew did a great job saving it.

I did speak with someone in safety last week, he couldn't talk about it, but did say the damage wasn't as bad as thought, well less than a million.

Glad no one was hurt.

I always thought men just don't belong in the cockpit ;)

Now wait a minute. You have me confused. I thought men belong in the cockpit, and women belong in the box office.

They belong in the kitchen eating meals that men prepare.

It's not that big a secret, Hugh.

hurry up with dinner, honey

megadeath,

instead of filling some quota, shouldnt you be home fixing your husband's lunch?

What do ya tell a woman with two black eyes????

Nothing....you already told her twice....

after a cursory search...

Of the NTSB website, I found info on a MD-11 tail strike after a flight control malfunction over at Subic Bay, Phillipines in June 2002. Sounds like a bear of a situation that required a high degree of professionalism to get the beast on the ground.

A flap falling off, a spoiler fully extended. Wow. Interesting reading.

HUGE understatement - - they were fortunate to keep it upright. They received numerous safety awards, including a Daedalion Award. Not only was tailstrike not high on their list of worries, it wasn't even ON the list! :)

.

oh, I get it now

Tail strike, colon cowboys... Groan.

Anyway, I'm still impressed with the story of the wounded MD-11. That got them an award from the dandelions (just teasing, I know how to spell it)? I thought that was a military pilot group. Well deserved, for sure.

Tony C, does your safety department have the full story and would they share it? I bet it would be a great CRM example for recurrent training.

I imagine they have the "full story," but I doubt they'd release anything. You'd probably have better luck dealing with our CRM department. I don't know enough of the details to advise you if it's a good CRM story or not, but I'd bet it's not a "bad CRM" story.
