Is a FedEx reserve pilot on probation okay setting up residence outside MEM
such as Bartlett or Collierville TN ? Is that to far away to make a 1.5 hour
check in. It looks okay on a map but traffic might be a problem.
May I please have some advice . Thank you.

A.m. callouts shouldn't be a problem. P.m. callouts might be depending on where you live. When I sat reserve in Graceland, I was only called out once right at 1 1/2 notice during the 3 months I was on reserve and most of the time you are notified at least a day prior to a trip. Remember, you are on probabtion so you don't want to make a name for yourself by not making the call out. Also, if they right out of airport standby crews, they can reduce your callout to 1 hour!

Hope this helps and welcome to the show! :)

Does sched. notify you when you are transitioned to 1 hour call ?
Thanks again .

Nope. The only provision in the contract is that you are allowed to park by the AOC. All hell will have to break loose with the schedule if they have used up all the airport standby crews and are giving you only a 1 hour notice. They are rare but could happen.

I bid reserve and live in Collierville...shouldn't be a problem. Collierville is jokingly referred to as "base housing". Plenty of guys live in Bartlett as well.

Drive time from Collierville is 25-35 minutes at the speed limit. During the morning rush (7:15-8:15) it can take an hour (rarely does).

I have never seen a flight depart that time of day, unless it is a deadhead.

When you get called with less than 1.5, ask for the late call parking lot code. I have on occasion, asked for the code when they called me close to 1.5 and they gave it to me.

You will not have any problem.

Morning tip: During rush hour, listen to AM 600 for frequent traffic updates. If a crash backs-up 385/240, bail out and take Winchester or another alternate route.

Welcome aboard!

Yeah, the drive time from Collierville isn't bad at night. Having spent the last 3 years or so doing RA, I've had the pleasure of seeing just about everything. Funny, I seem to get called inside 1.5 quite a bit. Probably at least once a month. Of course after spending so long on reserve, even when I'm notified the night before of a trip, I don't wake up until an hour before showtime and still make it in with a few minutes to spare. Couple of months ago, one of my buddies got the on the nose 1 hour call out for MEM to NRT and bang around Asia for a couple weeks. That's about the only thing I haven't done yet. That and the Otter in SFS.
So the answer to the original question, yes, all of the 'burbs of Memphis are OK for being on reserve. The traffic is an issure to be aware of, but you'll get a feel for that.

Good luck

I live in Cordova. . . and agree with all of the above posts. I did Reserve-B for 1.5 years, no problem living in the 'burbs.

I've made it comfortably from the checkout line at Lowe's before. The only time you're going to have any problem is from 7-9 am westbound on I-40/240, then it's going to take you an hour from home to the AOC. The only time you'll find yourself in that mess is for a deadhead or while you're in training.

I've found that if you are jammed up in traffic; call the schedulers they will give you late call parking (close to AOC). Just let them know you're on your way and they'll work with you. . .

Dually,

There are also some nice places to live in North Mississippi. Southaven, Olive Branch to name 2.

Of course you have to factor in the cost of a house alarm system, a rotweiler, claymore mines for the yard, guns and ammo! ;)

Dually-

I concur with everyone's replies. Honestly, you won't have to worry about traffic while sitting RA. There doesn't seem to be much traffic when heading in to work for the 0-dark-thirty showtimes!

Welcome aboard!

But you save on the cost of an alarm clock......the nightly gunshots should wake you up no problem.

True 'Dat!

When I was in m first week of new hire training, I was staying at the Homestead, over behind the Hollow Point Inn.

A mouse had climbed into the air conditioning of my 1987 Camaro and died. The funk was so bad I was losing friends over the smell in my clothes.

One night I decided to get that carcass out if it hare-lipped everybody on Bear Creek. I went to the Auto Zone off Elvis Presley Boulevard, bought some tools, and started pulling stuff apart there in the parking lot.

Not five minutes into it, I heard a screech. An Escort whipped into the parking lot, followed by two Memphis Police cruisers. In short order there were two teenage boys on their faces on the pavement, surrounded by cops with guns drawn and dogs barking.

I quietly put the parts on the floorboard and got the he!! out of there.

This is my motivation to drive 5 hours to work....
