First, thanks for all of your advice and support in the past...I received the rejection letter from FedEx last week. What I dont understand is that I thought the sim, SBI, and the 2 on 1 interview went very well. The testing, who knows. I never saw it comming. Is there any way to find out what I need to improve on? Any suggestions on reapplying? And, is it worth the effort to reapply. If turned down once, why would they give you a second chance when there are thousands of other applicants. Your advice is appreciated. Sluggo

Try XJet, they are hiring. You can try Pinnacle, they are also in MEM, maybe you'll get lucky and get a street captain.

Most places wont give you any information on why you were rejected for various reasons. It does suck though, the not knowing. You would think they would have to tell you why since you spent the time and money jumping through all there hoops. I have had 7 Airline interviews in my career. Got hired twice ( 1 of the 2went out of business) out of 7 interviews and I turned another one interview chance down. Sometimes its just luck of the draw. You can do everything right and still not make it. You can usually figure out where you may have been weak during the interview process but sometimes not. Some guys have alot of luck and when you talk about interviewing, some were offered (in the old days) multiple job offers at once. I never had that luck. Always struggling to try to stay ahead of the furlough/Chapter 11/7 procedings. Best advice I could give is dont give up. Keep educating yourself on interviewing processes. Read books on interviewing techniques, dressed for sucess etc. Its a highly competative field and you need to stand out in a positive way to make the cut. Networking always is a big help too! If you know anyone on the inside is a major bonus. Best of luck in your future airline interviews.

I can't offer any advice, but I can tell you that you are not alone. My partner is retired P-3 pilot. He's done well in the 135 world, has three Master Degrees, two Bachelor Degrees and a 737 type from the place everybody goes to, to get on with SWA. He has squadron buddies at SWA and FedEx and his brother is a training captain at FedEx. He recently got turned down by both FedEx and SWA. He leaves next week for one of the fractionals.

The guy is a super dude, fun to work with and I wish him the best of luck...I was really rooting for him to get in one of the two places.

Good luck sluggo!

Sluggo,

AWA is looking to hire 200 this year. 22 narrowbody Airbi's
coming the next 24 months. It's not as stable as a Fed Ex gig but show me a pax carrier today outside of SWA that is. Good luck and press on!!:)

Are you and your "partner" gay?
No, but when I crawled off your mother this morning, she said you were.

Good Come back FN FAL!!! I think gay might also be defined as someone whom can differentiate the fact that they've flown a C172 AND A C172RG!!

Hey Sluggo

Sorry to hear about your rejection but I think it's cool you're willing to open it up to discussion on this board with the likes of...well let's leave him un-named, shall we?

Was FedEx your first airline interview? Very few people succeed at their first interview.

I was rejected from both Alaska and Cathay Pacific.

Alaska was obvious (I did a really dumb thing in the sim).

Cathay was less obvious (and they never tell you), but over time, with lots of reflection back on the entire process I can pretty much narrow it down.

Ironically, as life always is, I'm digging my present gig more than I ever thought possible and when compared to where I would've been at either Alaska (still in the pool) or Cathay (an SO living in HKG) I'm just happy to say, Hang in there.

Who knows what's next?
Best.

Mar, you are a man with a lot of wisdom.

Great post!

English

Thanks for that. I appreciate ya.

I've got a few T-shirts, you know, and the thinning hair, dark circles and bags under the eyes to go with them.

Cheers.

Mar thanks for the great post! I always thinks its super funny to see which direction these posts go. About half get it right. The other half...Who knows. Thanks for the laugh! I needed it. Later guys

Just a little devils advocacy here...It may also be that you don't need to change anything and your interview was fine. It's just that there are lots of good applicants to choose from. It very easily could have boiled down to something you can't control or shouldn't try to change. With a different interviewer on a different day or with a different interview group you might have gotten the job. Don't give up on them though if you really want to work there. I'm not sure how FEDEX deals with it but I know lots of pilots that get hired at second interviews. Get your paperwork in and Good luck.

Fedex will interview you a second time.......Particulary if you are a son, or even better, a daughter of some real senior Capt or Management Guy!

That is funny. I wish the moderators would disappear the little Hem-a-Rhoid. I'm convinced he truly is a "Flamer".

Keep on plug'n

For what its worth!

I was turned down by Fedex back in the late 90's. I also thought I did a great job. The sim went great, the interview went well-I thought, and the testing-well like you who knows? I received the letter the last day. Not a great sight seeing the truck pull up to the house and you know whats coming. I had two people that gave me great recommendations. Like you I wish I knew what went wrong, but that will never happen. If you really want to get on with Fedex, try again!

I was told that they will interview people that have been turned down, dont give up the dream. Eventually, I thought I found the ultimate flying job, but later found out that it turned into a nightmare. I'm back at my old job, took the recall and am happy with how things have turned out.

Something will come along, keep networking, and if Fedex is the place you want to be........dont give up!

my 2 cents

Good Luck..........we all need it in this crazy industry!!!!!!!!!!

Sluggo,

I've also got one of those Fedex rejection letters buried in my files somewhere. It's tough to stomach rejection at any airline after you've put so much effort into preparing for the interview, but things usually have a way of working out in the long run.

After being turned down at FDX I was hired at SWA but had to wait over 18 months in the SWA pool; at the time it seemed like I was never going to fly again. I'm now starting my third year at SWA and all those applications and interviews seem like ancient history. Things have definitely worked out for me and I'm sure they eventually will for you too.

Keep those applications and updates coming until you end up where you want to be- when you start class at your dream job (wherever it may be) it will just be that much sweeter as you look back at all you had to go through to get there.

Good luck!

FedEx didn't like me either. I made it through the two day process, also. I was bummed out too but soon another door opened. Looking back I'm glad the way things worked out. You will be too... maybe that includes getting on with them down the road or maybe a career at UPS is in your future? (was your interview suit brown?)

I've been through the same bunch of goofy interviews everyone else has experienced and I still don't get it. It seems to me that if one airline had found the magic formula to get 100% best pilots/employees, the secret would get out and all the others would hire using the same method. Yet, that doesn't happen and you wind up with the standard mix.
5% that never get the word,
90% that just come to work and do a good job
and 5% who are astronauts.
Sure the balance may vary one or two points, but it seems to be fairly accurate.

So then why all the extra drama at the interviews? HR protecting their turf? Management showing how much they know? Explain it to me, please.

My last interview was a quick interview (CP, senior pilot and HR) with no sim, no test, no gunk. It's not the greatest job, but guess what? Here's the break down on the pilot group: About 5% never seem to get it, 90% just show up and...

Westward,

I've never heard it put like that (ratio formula) but that is a pretty good thing you came up with.

Not to get too far off topic, but...

See, here's the problem: The airlines (gross over-generalization, I admit) aren't looking for the "best" pilots. It ain't Top Gun. It's just an airline that operates highly automated equipment. What most hiring boards are looking for is someone that they feel they can spend a week with and not want to rip their lungs out after the very first leg. Not only that, but they'd like to have a warm fuzzy feeling that someone won't take their very expensive training and immediately bolt to the next airline...

...but there's not a lot of hiring right now so it's super-competitve and recommendations from the check-airmen alone are probably enough to fill classes for the next year...

...thus, they need to utilize those "goofy" (and I agree for the most part) interview games to help thin the herd.

And then there are the psychologists who have gotten themselves a fine salary studying monkies--er--I mean, pilots, and developing really dumb tests to predict how one will succeed in their very 'unique' training environment.

Well. What are we left with? Absurd hypotheticals, unrealistic sim profiles, crazy little written tests and blue suits with red ties.

Whatever. The bottom line is that past performance predicts future behavior. That, and a variation on the sentiment that if you want to show me who you are, then show me your friends.

Press on.

Sluggo,

I think sometimes there is no rhyme or reason...I had and offer form NWA (pre 9/11) and got hired by Fedex, but was turned down by Alaska and ATA... I thought all the interviews went well but you never really know. Just keep plugging...two of the eight in my new hire class were hired second time around and interviewed the first time withing the last 3 years. Good luck.

Kalitta Air Needs U!

Kalitta Air flies around the world around the clock. B747-100/200.

Four more classes are planned this year with 12 FO's per class.

Send resumes to the CP and do a search in the Cargo Forum for more info.

17 days per month usually in a row and the layovers aren't bad ANC, EHAM. HKG, HNL, LAX, KWI, BRU to name a few.

It's not a FedEx, UPS, or a SWA, but it sure beats unemployment!

Good Luck!
