If you work for Fedex Express, and after 1 yr, you meet the qualifications, and a position is open, you will get an interview. Whether you’re throwing boxes, sweeping floors, flying for corp. or advising Fred on acquisitions.

If you are hired as professional instructor, you are also hire to the line, after meeting your 3 yr obligation in the training dept. You actually go through 2 sets of interviews to be a prof, one for the line and one for prof. You must pass both to be hired as a prof.

Furloughees,
I don't think there is an official written policy. There is one recent furloughed American guy on the property(according to BH). Back in the early 90s FedEx got burned big time by American. We hired a bunch of American guys who resigned their sen. When it came time for recalls Cecil(CP AA, I think) did a cool thing for his guys and disregarded the letters. Mass exodus. And who can blame them. Right seat of MD-80 vs 727FE doing night hub turns.

It's not just about the guys that left. It's quite conceivable that there could be attitude problems when someone comes from the right seat of A320 and is now coffee bitch on the slave ship in the middle of the night.

I think that the SCP believes that anybody who is willing to go back to a commuter, or throw boxes in the middle of the night, is going to be d@mn glad to be the coffee B1tch. Not someone who is looking for a paycheck until xyz recalls them.

DC10 Coffee B1tch (and proud of it!)

Downside of Throwing Boxes

Apparently there are some land mines associated with "throwing boxes" while awaiting a pilot interview. Remember that your peers working the hub will be there for the rest of their lives, and anything you do (or happens to you) can and will follow you to your pilot interview. If your manager in the "hub" has had a bad experience with pilots (say. . . perhaps unflattering articles in the local paper during contract negotiations??), then you're in danger of getting paper written on you that WILL follow you to your interview.

I talked to one guy who was flying part-time for another company while throwing boxes here in MEM. During his line pilot interview, his FDX attendance record was pulled out by the interviewer and compared with his flight log book. Apparently he had called in sick a few times (with his FDX manager's approval) to make 4-day weekends for flying. Thank you for playing. . .try again next year.

Hopefully someone on this board has gone this route and my gouge is wrong. . but unless someone has very compelling reasons to "throw boxes" at FDX vs. working at Home Depot or greet people at Wal-Mart, I advise them to not take the chance.

I'm sure that working as a Professional or Corporate flight department is a totally different experience and if you don't mind waiting three years to get to the line would be an outstanding option.

I was just able to get my profile in as well - took lots of refreshes and resubmitting information, but it did finally take. Does anyone know what the military conversion is at Fed-ex? I just left the hours as straight up off my military log, but every little bit would help. Last I remember it was .2 hours per sortie, but I don't want to convert anything unless I know for sure. Thanks,

GO TWINS!!

it is really official

The FedEx pilot web site is updated it officially states the site is open for new applicants:

"To learn about an aviation career with FedEx choose the Pilot Careers option. If you would like to be considered, continue to the pilot profile form to submit your information."

Bring em on!

Twins,

You are correct 0.2 per sortie, so start counting!

This is the best sign I have seen from FedEx that the hiring machine is begining to move forward!

...well, other than the classes training right now.

With my fingers still crossed that I get to move to Memphis REAL SOON!!!!

Just found it in the Question and Answer section:
Q: Can I use a conversion factor when determining flight time accumulated in the military?
A: Yes. You may add a plus (.2) per sortie factor to your flight times. Please note that this conversion factor is applied to each sortie not to total time.

Thanks and Fly Safe

If your goal is to get a seniority number with FedEx, the compelling reason is a guaranteed interview in 1 year. Home Depot won't get you an interview, and being a professional instructor (or corporate pilot) will take three years.

Yes, there are risks, but the potential reward is great. If you do stupid things, don't be surprised when they follow you. But of course, that holds true in all of your other endeavors, as well.

(By the way, throwing boxes is not the only way to go. ANY permanent position with FedEx Express will get you the interview in a minimum of 12 months - - some jobs require a longer commitment. Working any of the hubs, working any of the ramps, or working any of the stations will fill the bill. If you Absolutely want to fly for FedEx, I recommend the option.)
