Here is part of an email from the "inside":

The A-380 is scheduled to show up in August 2008 ... The MD-10
program is scheduled and planned to go to completion; in the end
there will be 83 MD-10s ... FedEx is adding 13 additional widebody
aircraft in FY 2005 . By July 2007 all 727-100s will be gone ...
the DC-10 will be phased out by FY 2008 to 2009 - possibly a year
earlier if operating with six or so left doesn't make sense at
that time ... We are adding MD-11s this year ... the B-737 program is
on hold with 757s and A320s back under consideration ... By April
2005 three westbound around-the-world MD-11 flights will be added
and one eastbound MD-11 by September 2005 ... There will be a small
posting (bid) in September 2004 ... no growth (pilot count) for LAX
is planned ... a small amount is planned for ANC.

Just some interesting info to pass along.

My man

I understand that hiring is occuring now, but does your crystal ball forsee any year(s) down the road of "massive hiring?"

I think I saw somewhere else that DAL is expecting lots of retirements in late 2000's, (2008-2012 time frame).

Obviously the 727 can't stay around forever, but with China, Far East expansion, etc,etc just curious what the FedEx outlook is

I can retire from this government job at age 48 with full pension and maybe see if FedEx wants me or punch out now (age 35) and roll the dice on the "airline career"

still 50/50 on this one

steady hiring

My crystal ball shows steady hiring indef. There shouldn't be any MASSIVE hiring pushes unless UPS and DHL file for CH-7 (ain't gunna happen). We have steady growth and a pretty good retirement schedule. All signs point toward fresh suits on the property for many, many years to come. The last dry spell was a combination of a couple of events (in my mind). After a major hiring push following the postal contract award, the economy obviously slowed down. The staffing we had was sufficient for a couple years, but not any longer. We have been hiring now for a few plus months and like I said above - looks like it will continue.

As for anyone contemplating gett'n out or stay'n in, I personally would stay in until you had something lined up. No longer is the case were you can punch first and expect multiple major airline interviews.

Good luck to all that are interested in FedEx - we hope to see a lot of you real soon! Now all we need is a good contract! (U2 UPS!)

Goose,

From what I have been told Fedex will not even think about calling you for an interview untill you are within 2 months or so from separating. The Air Force requires 6 months notice to separate. Tough call to make.

true, tough call

BonesF15,

I remember hearing that as well, but cannot confirm it. Unlike my separation in 01', I would be more app to have some sort of job lined up BEFORE I got out. Be it guard, reserve, or Home Depot, a plan is definitely needed. From what I remember about my econ major, there was something to the tune of supply vs. demand and me thinks one heavily outweighs the other right now.

Again, good luck.

VSChip - that's the most beautiful posting I've ever seen.

Management must really have their hands tied if they are going to complete the MD-10 program to the end. I can't imagine having 83 of them on property, what a waste. I cringe eveytime I pickup a FPR and it is 10-10.

I thought the company was trying to work out some 73/75 deal with Boeing and scrap the rest of the completions. Anyone else have any inside info. I can't remember who made the comment on another thread but it made great sense...The 737 would fit alot better on the ramps to replace the 727 and the 757 would take up too much room and the ramp would have to completely reworked almost. You could park the 737 in the 727 space and wouldn't have to hardly change anything. BUT, from a pilot stand point, I hear the 757 is a lot more fun to fly.

Hiring looks good, keep'em coming.

EVERYDAY IS ANOTHER DAY OF RETROACTIVE PAY!!!!!

Ok, here are the stats. The 757-200 is only 2 feet longer than 727-200. It does have a substantialy larger wing span though, which allow for a greater mtogw.

The largest 737(900) is significantly smaller, and much slower than the 727-200.

727 - 200

Length 153.2'
Wingspan 108'
MTOGW 210000

757-200

MTOGW 255000
Cruise .80

737-900
