Didn't see this posted so......20 Airbus Capts/FOs to keep training going till bigger bid in June. Bid mentions Airbus "China-area" domicile and a European 757 domicile. Company currently building FY08 plan. Says hiring unknown but minimal.

3 place to 2 place, and Age 65.....

How does the European bases work for you guys? Do people live over there, commute, or is there a paid deadhead sort of deal?

I'm told by a very good source, expect an update in June after the bid. Then the plan for next year will be finalized. Age 65 will not happen overnight, or even this year. That means (speculatively) around 400 pilots, possibly. Nothing happening for a couple of months though.

Rumors fly everywhere, but this is what Management is thinking and it seems to be commonly accepted on line as well as the best info currently available.

So, what happens when age 60 guys do move over to the FE seat this year, and then age 65 happens maybe next year? Since they are still on the property, would they move back over to the left seat? That would be screwed up. Both UPS and FEDEx would have that problem, since they both still have FEs. I guess NWA could have that problem too since they still fly 747-200s out of ANC.

General - some of the over 60 crowd already goes back to SO positions. From a "new hire" perspective it really does not matter if the folks ahead of them on the list are sitting sideways, or straight ahead. An unfilled slot is an unfilled slot. There are also many questions about bidding, the company, and the contract. Just because someone can fly as PIC does not mean the rest of the seniority list and the Company are going to negotiate a deal that lets them do so. Nothing about this can be assumed right now.

Delta will likely reduce the supply of 757's in the used market anyway.

AA is likely to give Fedex their 757s. And, I know about the ROPES---Real Old Pilot Engineers---I saw them on the L1011 and 727s. And, as far as it affecting newhires at Fedex or UPS---it would. If they remain in the left seat or go back over that way on new equipment, it will mean some stagnation.

European Basing

Flatspin,

Currently, Fedex doesn't have a European pilot domicile so Airbus folks who can hold the intra-Europe lines are based in Mem and the lines are buillt with commercial deadheads on both ends. This would be our first European crew domicile.

Ninerfan - are these DH legs long enough to invoke the "Business Class" requirement in the contract? If so, not bad, although with enforced rest on the leg over it could get to be a long trip.

Any deadhead or combo of deadheads over 5 hours qualifies for First Class, (at FedEx). No business class unless you need to stay within your accepted fare budget. I was out of First class once in 5 years of doing it, (unless you count that Business First trash they had at Delta).
