The FAA is requiring IQ testing for certain pilots who make a "no-go" decision. What is the consensus of my fellow professional aviators on this? Please weigh in with your feedback. Seems like someone somewhere in OKC has lost touch with something. Out. By the way, this is not flamebait, I have documentation to prove this new requirement. The particular test is known as the WAIS-R (Wenschler Adult Intelligence Test). Out.

Seems unnecessary

You know what? If the FAA would implement a serious written testing process they wouldn't feel the need to add an IQ test on top of that.

That's sort of like washing the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher because you think the machine doesn't do a very good job.

I think everybody agrees the current written tests are pretty much a joke.

The onus of providing a serious test of knowledge and skill is on the examiner/inspector/check-airman.

The FAA should take a serious look at exactly what sort of 1940's drivel it's holding us to be accountable for and then ask themselves *who really should be subjected to an IQ test?*

Peace:cool:

I agree with DHampton

I am confused, no one ever crashed an airplane by leaving it at the gate - what is the point of questioning folks who have the knowledge/skill/and judgement to recoginize conditions are beyond their knowledge/skill and judgement. Give IQ tests to folks who NEVER say no ... they are the one's woking on busting their checkride with Newton.

Government Test

What it really sounds like to me is another obstacle, such as the FE written or the ATP written. It's only a matter of time before ALL ATPs has the review for this test, and ASA will publish the question bank. At which point it will degenerate to another square the aspiring pilot needs to accomplish.

IQ.....

FAA administering an IQ test.... Hmmmmm - smacks of the old oxymoron thing to me, yea, like military intelligence... yea.....:D

Of course IF they were to write an FAR to deal with the IQ issue....

121.69 Airman;IQ testing requirement

(a)No certificate holder may use any person as an airman, nor may any person serve as an airman unless that person-

(1)Has been tested under the requirements of the FAA Aptitude Required Test(FART), unless said airman is granted a waiver under subpart (B)(1) of this section;
(2)is otherwise qualified for the operations for which he/she is to be used.

(b)A waiver may be granted in lieu of the FART if the airman;
(1)has proven to the Adminsitrator, or the representitive of the Administrator that he is qualified under section (a)(1) of this part.

Glad you enjoyed my feeble attempt at humor!! Have a great weekend! Tred

What a brilliant idea ... "reward" someone that makes a command decision, by questioning his/her intelligence through testing.

"Who is the ad wizard that came up with that one?"

No matter how you slice it, it's wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. Period. What applies to one applies to all in a just and fair society...but then again...that's just my opinion. Sends the wrong message to up and coming future Captains. Sounds like someone at the FAA has a warped sense of job responsibility and/or authority. Peace.
