I believe this is different then SWA, Delta was grounded to do the inspection. SWA was not doing the inspections that were required, and as a result fined 10 million dollars. At least DAL is following the law.
The inspections that SWA "didn't" do was a series of overlapping inspections. These inpections were done at the time that they were required, however on 46 of the aircraft a 20 square inch area wasn't done. When SWA found out LAST year they weren't done they told Boeing and the FAA. Both said it was okay to wait 10 days to inpsect that 20 square inch area, SWA did it in 8. It was a year later, after political pressure, that the FAA changed their mind and put in the fine.

From what I read, the DC9 / MD88 issue is nothing. We are talking a wire wrap with one inch spacing, versus one and a quarter.

If the FAA wanted to really do somthing about safety, they would knock off these last minute runway changes that cause confusion at a workload intensive point of a flight.

From another thread Citation Lover posted a quote from American on the issue:
this was sent to AA's pilots:

RE: MD80 WIRE BUNDLE REINSPECTION

IT HAS BEEN WIDELY REPORTED THAT THE FAA HAS INCREASED THE AUDITING OF MAINTENANCE RECORDS OF ALL AIRLINES. DURING THE AUDIT OF AMERICAN AIRLINES, A JOINT TEAM OF AA AND FAA INSPECTORS RAISED QUESTIONS REGARDING AN ALREADY ACCOMPLISHED AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE CONCERNING HOW A CERTAIN BUNDLE OF WIRES IS SECURED TO THE MD-80 AIRCRAFT. AA IS IN FULL COMPLIANCE WITH THE AD.

THE MAIN ISSUE CONCERNS HOW A PROTECTIVE SLEEVE OVER THE AUX HYDRAULIC PUMP WIRING IS SECURED TO A WIRE BUNDLE IN THE WHEE WELL IN ACCORDANCE WITH AA MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES. THE AA SPECIFICATIONS REQUIRE THIS SLEEVE BE TIED TO A WIRE BUNDLE EVERY ONE INCH - IT APPEARS SOME TIE INTERVALS MAY EXCEED THE ONE-INCH SPECIFICATION. WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF REINSPECTING THE MD-80S TO MAKE SURE THE WIRING IS INSTALLED AND SECURED EXACTLY IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE AA DIRECTIVES. BECAUSE THE PROCESS CAN TAKE SEVERAL HOURS TO REINSPECT EACH AIRCRAFT, WE HAVE HAD TO CANCEL APPROXIMATELY 200 FLIGHTS. MAINTENANCE INSPECTED 203 MD-80S LAST NIGHT AND REMOVED 79 OF THESE AIRPLANES FROM SERVICE TO RE-SECURE THE PROTECTIVE SLEEVE AND A WIRING BUNDLE. THESE AIRPLANES ARE EXPECTED TO BE IN SERVICE BY THE END OF THE DAY. WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF COMPLETING THE INSPECTIONS ON THE REMAINING AIRPLANES AND WILL RETURN THEM TO SERVICE ON A ROLLING BASIS THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

MAINTENANCE PROJECTS THEY WILL HAVE THE REMAINING AIRPLANES INSPECTED WITHIN TWO DAYS.

Maybe this is the latest airline tactics to save money due to the fuel spike. Maybe it couldn't hurt to cancel over 300 flights instead of pissing fuel away on fuel guzzling airplane on money losing routes and reaccomodate pax on other flights on a slow midweek day, and check some wires volunteerily. Scheduled carriers can't cancel flights just because it's not full. Maybe they got it all figured out...haha.

I had my JFK-FLL turn cnx due to the 88 being unavailable. With it being overbooked on both legs, it couldn't have come at a worse time..

Glad we could help. ( Whats that saying... people in glass houses shouldnt throw stones) Should of had your $%it together before having a laugh at our expense!

The big difference is our airline gets slammed every day.....
The bigger difference, we weren't avoiding mandatory inspections, this was an AD that came out yesterday afternoon at 5, hence why your airline got fined $10 million (for avoiding mandatory inspecions)!;)

Your airline gets slammed everyday by who? creditors...true! I agree with you.

The difference is, we accept it.
For a pansy like you, you cry about it! Now pay your fine and start inspecting those airplanes like you're supposed to!

I'm sure the creditors have long since thrown in the towel trying to get money from Delta. Loaning money to them is like loaning money to a meth head.

Based on your picture, I'd say you're speaking from experience! Better hope the colonel doesn't find out about that.

Creditors need the stock up. No doubt there pushing for this merger and Anderson is bailing water out of the ship. Hopefully it'll be done in the next two weeks, with or without the pilots.

SIU-

Great point. Don't remember what it was, but I wish you would comment on every thread and do so very often. Or even better, could you send me a digital copy of that avatar? Thanks, bro.

True. I'm even more curious about what type of games they're playing with their balance sheet. I'm sure the SEC could find some creative accounting there.

Are you trying to rain on Delta's parade ? Can't you see that they have a lot going on right now!

Geeze,....give 'em a break !

(...'cause we want to merge with 'em !)

Sorry. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. I'm sure Enron...er...Delta's books are squared away.
