If it's true...beginning of the end. When you start polluting the gene pool with outsiders

I think it's the stagnate gene pool that has made the airline industry as a whole fester. SWA is akin to the crocidile that survived while all of it's cousins got wiped out. In 60 million years, SWA will still be here and all others airlines will be burried in the sands of time.

As astute as SWA management has always been, you'd think they'd immediately step forward to dispel this "rumor" if it were truly false.

If management took the time to dispel every internet rumor out there they'd have no time for anything else. I'm sure they have better things to do.

latest from the rumor mill herb is going to be on 60 minutes or cnn tomorrow night for what i dont know? big announcement ?

blzr,

Hope you're right as SWA has been the only glimmer of intelligence in the world of airline management. That's why you'd hate to see some bunch of non-airline types ride into town and take over.

This is assuming scheduled service as it exists now with fuel being lowered to approx 45 cents per gallon of Jet A. (exxon-mobile cost of production)

Unfortunately Exxon/Mobil is in the business of selling fuel for a profit. If they just wanted to sell a lot of cheap fuel they could at their gas stations, and crush most of the competition. Exxon/Mobil owns every company in its production pipeline from oil exploration, drilling, drilling, refining, to the gas pump. If they just wanted to charge cut rate prices and run the non-combined oil companies out of business (i.e., racetrack, speedway, and every other place that just buys gas from a wholesaler) they could. But then they wouldn't make money. Everything in their stores etc is geared to get more customers in so they can sell more gas. They are competing against the other biggies that are setup like they are: BP, Shell, Texaco, Chevron, and Sunoco etc. All of which would just love to see Exxon/mobil bleed themselves dry.

Also don't forget that fully 1/3 of what you pay at the pump is taxes. Set as so many cents per gallon not a percentage of the selling price. Also transporting the raw and refined materials from stage to stage, is a huge fixed cost.

I would think that if Exxon/Mobil is looking at SWA (a ver big IF). They want SWA because it is a very profitable company as it stands now, not a fun project.

Just my 2 cents - Kingaira90

If Exxon buys SWA, Then I heard that Boeing is going to start up their own airline. Boeing already has a name for it. United Airlines!!!

Could it be?

Maybe this is the big announcment!!! Oh Boy.......

NEW YORK, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Dell Inc. (DELL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) topped Fortune magazine's annual list of most admired companies in the United States, displacing Wal-Mart Inc. (WMT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , the world's largest retailer, the magazine said on Tuesday.

Dell, the world's largest personal computer company, clinched the No. 1 spot for the first time, moving up from No. 5. General Electric Co. (GE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) placed second, while Starbucks Corp. (SBUX.O: Quote, Profile, Research) was third. Wal-Mart moved to the No. 4 spot. Meanwhile, top U.S. air carrier Southwest Airlines (LUV.N: Quote, Profile, Research) landed the number five position. The complete list is currently available on Fortune's web site. The magazine plans to release the entire list of most admired companies at newstands on Feb. 28.

We make a profit in this environment, in this industry, and all we get is Number 5?

Bullsh!t

On another note, did anyone see the Paris Hilton phone list? The number for SWA (the 1-800#) was on it. It was the only airline # I saw.

Dell, the most admired company? Who voted in the poll? They outsource many of their jobs to India. I agree that SWA should have been higher up, or at the very least, higher than Dell. Surprised that Starbucks was not up at the top of the heap. They have outstanding customer service and a solid business plan.

I guess wonders will never cease!

maybe thats whats wrong with the airline industry. there is no way to outsource jobs to foreign nations to provide a cheaper product. the american public has grown used to paying low costs for products because of outsourcing. the airline managers have matched the hatch, however they cut costs so low they shot themselves in the foot and are now outsourcing those low paid jobs to us, involuntarily...that sucks!

I believe at one time (or perhaps it is still happening) that Delta moved some of the phone jobs for reservations over to India I think. I remember this as I was trying to make a reservation to ATL for last April, and the reservation agent told me about it. I do not think it was for the initial reservation, but for problems with an existing reservation.
I just checked the Lou Dobbs CNN site with companies exporting jobs, and Delta was listed and so was United Airlines. Not sure how up to date the list is.

Gary Kelly was asked directly last night at the MDW message to the field what the "big announcement" was. He said, "The big announcement is....THERE IS NO BIG ANNOUNCEMENT." Sorry folks. He even mentioned the exxon rumor, as well as other rumors that we are buying ATA, Airtran, or anyone else and gave a good chuckle as to how absolutely ridiculous they were. Guess we'll just be chugging along with business as usual...
