Anyone have a ideas for where to stay on Exuma. We're thinking Club Peace and Plenty. The Four Seasons is out of our budget.
Anything we should know about for fun outside of the normal Bahamas type stuff?
thx.
Sure would like to stay at the 4 Seasons. We charge $800 per night for crew fees so between $325 each for the hotel and $75 Per-diem we're maxed. I'm thinking they want to make a little on the fee so i'm leaning towards the other place.
Just went there this weekend. The FBO is only a fuel truck, Strachan's
(242) 345-0641. "Jr" will do a great job with the fuel but only if you have
cash or a fuel card. He does not accept credit cards. $3.40 a gallon. The
customs agents were very friendly and clearing took less than 5 minutes.
There is a $60 "overtime" fee on Sunday for customs even though they are
they for the airlines anyway. I am still a little confused if the
passengers are suppose to go through security at the terminal before going
to the aircraft, several of the airport employees were too. Bring your own
chocks. We did not use a handler. The "control tower" on 118.0 provides
minimal information and advisories only. Our Sprint phones did not work.
We stayed at the Club Peace and Plenty which was adequate but service was
below standard (~$200 a night). Watch the servers - they will tell you the
tip is not included in the meal when it really is. We rented a car but
there is really no place to drive, a cab might work out cheaper. The hotel
did have wireless internet but only in the lobby. There is a great boat
rental place across the street from the hotel where you can rent a Boston
whaler boat for the day for about $85.
and...
Be careful with the boats, I took out a propeller that cost me $185, plus
the boat rental. Best place I've ever laid over. Dito on the Peace and
Plenty, I think there are two of them. I stayed at the one, not downtown.
It was really nice, but, Yeap, NO SERVICE. Cingular phones did work. DS
We were there a few months ago. Strachen Avation handled us. They reserved us a beach house at the Palm Bay Beach Club, along with a taxi ride. It is a good place, and they have free kayaks you can take. They had free internet in the lobby, but no wifi in the rooms. They have a free van that will take you over to Gorgetown , or it is about a 40 minute walk. Nothing in Georgetown worth seeing, but go get yourself a Boston Whaler for about 80 bucks a day, and you can drive it back to the hotel.
With the boat there is plenty of islands close to go visit, and if you are there on Sunday there is a awesome pig roast on one of the Islands. Great Snorkling and underwater caves. If you fly fish there is great bonefishing. Take a good book, and enjoy.
Fuel was no problem. The customs are laid back, so don't worry.
With the 4 Seasons now there, they are seeing a lot more jet traffic. You won't be alone.
Take a boat ride over to the chat and chill, it's nothing special but its a free boat ride and a good way to kill the day. http://www.chatnchill.com/
I have stayed at both Peace and Plenty's, one is defiantly better then the other. I just can't remember which one(one has in room internet the other doesn't). Call them directly and ask, if you let the handler make the room reservations you may wind up at the dumpy one.
The one down town is a little more convenient for walking around but it doesn't have a beach, only a pool.
Ahhh...Exuma ~ a tiny little paradise! Stayed there about a year ago at the Peace & Plenty. Good people running the joint and awesome food made after they bring in the daily catch. If you're looking for Nassau night life, you'll never - ever - find it here. There are 2 P&P's - try to stay at the northernmost one, as the other one is right near the "straw market"...and I thought was a little scabby. All in all, I spent 7 days doing absolutely nothing except reading a couple books on my lanai looking over the bay. Again, this place is NOT gonna be a resort! However, on the weekend (I believe) there was another hotel a few hundred yards away that we walked to and listened to music and had some drinks and watched the ladies dance
G4G5 - we didn't have internet last year at the northernmost one, but there is a pool and steps right to the water.
Also, we got a rental car - definitely worth it! The girl didn't even bother asking us about insurance, as she said there's only 1 road ~ they're not going anywhere if they steal it. Drive to the north end of the island. Get out and walk a couple hundred yards on the sandbar in water that sparkles. Bring a camera and even take the boat over to Stocking Island. A nice beach and hiking area.
Eat the conch chowder. Period. But beware of the fish dinners served at the little huts that line the roads! Unless you like to unwrap foil and see the fishes head staring back.
if you don't want fish with the head still attached then don't order fish in the Bahamas! You can ask to have it removed but they will laugh at you. The head is supposed to be a delicasy
I stayed at a place called Master Harbour Villas. It is outside of town and pretty secluded. Might be more fun to stay closer to town, but I will put the info at the bottom.
Watch out for the Rum Punch! I lost a day of my life after a few of those. Most of the natives wake up to hair of the dog there, so needless to say they mix a little stronger there.
I had some incredible meals at a place called Cheaters that is a few miles south of George Town. They never have more than two items on the menu at once, one is usually cracked conch, and the other was always sheep guts or something. Didn't try the latter, but the conch was amazing. They catch it and crack it open right in front of the restaurant.
Beautiful place can't wait to go back!

If you stay at the P&P in town, they include a day or two of boat rental for each weeks stay. We hooked up with some other guests who had three rooms for a week and they parlayed a boat for the whole week. They were gracious enough to invite us along. Two of their party had been coming down there for 20+ years and knew many unique spots that were only accessible by boat. Bring the beer (as well as a cooler) in with you as it's not particularly cheap. There is a meal plan available at the P&P. My copilot had lobster every night.
If you rent a boat, inspect it carefully. We had an overheating motor one day and a loose throttle linkage another. If you have a problem, speak wiht the marina owners in the office, not the dock dudes. Bring a good book or two and SPF80.
If the pax want to leave from another island, make sure that it is a POE. Other wise you will have to return to Exuma or Nassau to clear outbound.
For excitement, you can drive down to the DEA heliport ond take pictures of the black helicopters. Only the Feds would think that black is the perfect camoflage against the South Atlantic and the Bahamian shoals. I think that they believe that it makes them invisible.
