I watched Red Bull on cable a couple weeks ago, surprised to see it on TV. I've always wanted to try aerobatics, and I'm trying to schedule some unusual attitude training in an Aerobat in a couple months (posted a request for info here, in fact). After I get my funds built back up I'll probably try to do an Aero course somewhere on a Citabria, or something. Looks like a blast.

Yup, if you're looking for all out unlimited performance, go with the Edge 540. the Extras are great aircraft, but the Edge WILL outfly them. My company's headquarters and hangar are right next the Zivko operation in Guthrie, OK. I've had the opportunity to go over on several occasions and check out their facility and see various aircraft under construction. last week they had just completed a brand new Red Bull race plane... AWESOME aircraft!! Didnt have my camera with me that day, unfortunately.

The only thing that concerns me about aerobatics is the teeny, tiny parachute you have to wear. I think I'd wanna jump in one of those once (with a reserve, if possible :D ) just to feel OK about using it when needed.

I did a static line jump when I was in the Army (not at Benning) and I had to literally be pushed out the door. I'm scared to death of heights and am concerned about freezing when it came time to jump from an aircraft in an unrecoverable inverted spin, er sump'n. Of course ... that's a good reason to ensure I don't get the airplane too badly out of shape. :D

I have owned two Extra 300S's in the past.

My last one was sold to Red Bull and it is flown by a BA 747 guy, great to see my old airplane doing well.

Walter has redesigned the 300S, made it about 300lbs lighter and I think it is a much better airplane than the Edge, the craftsmanship is light years ahead of many of the other planes on the market.

You can buy a high time straight Extra 300 (two place mid wing) for around 100-125K. PLan on an $$$$$ 1,000 hour inspection and hopefully it had the tail mod done (AD on some Vertical tubing in the tail) the Extra 300L (low wing two place) can be had for around 150K-300K depending on how new and the time on the engine and airframe. The Extra 300S (single seat balls to the wall monster) can be had for around 125K-200K. I sold mine since I was not flying her enough and the price of AVGAS is around $5 a gallon and when you go out and fly a 15 minute routine you burn about 10 gallons, do this three times a day for several days, then ferry to the next contest it all adds up. I had an insurance bill of around $2500 a year (with Airshow coverage and Competition)

I miss my Extra, it was like having a Ferrari. I ended with an Chrsiten Eagle II, I have two seats now, and only 4 cylindes to feed, no where anything close in performance but all the chicks I give rides seem to not mind.

The Edge is a great airplane, but don't knock the Extra out yet, not too mention the MX-2 which might make the Red Bull Race next year as the "Latest and Greatest"

Good luck

The Edge 540 is a great airplane but Zivko isn't taking orders for them anymore. Extra is making a great airplane but I think the MX-2 is going to be the airplane that sets the bar in the near future.

What do you guys think about the Zlin 142, Lazer 200, and the Cap 10B?

Not that I will ever be able to afford anything more than a run-out Acrosport 2. :(

I got an hour of dual in a CAP-10C about 2 months ago (it was a "B", but the owner put a new wing on it, making it a "C"). Really nice. Not too extreme. Much more comfortable than the Pitts. He let me land it too. We did spins, hammerheads, a bunch of negative G work, et al.
I'd prefer tandom seating, but, hey, you can't have everything.
All-in-all, I'd consider owning a CAP-10C if I was going to have something along these lines.

I heard that they have so much other contract work (government?) that is much more lucrative it doesn't pay to build the Edge right now. I don't think they have closed the door on it but just don't have the time in the near future.

I'm going to have to hit the lottery and try to entice them to build one more!
