Mr. Hat,

I think you should actually not waste your time with college and find a way to fly an F-16. 'Cuz obviously then you would be really cool and could nit-pick what others post on an internet forum and then CAL would love you a whole lot b/c you know you'd be better than everyone then? :D

Love,
One of your former XJT (now CAL) brethren who is pulling for you bro.

Oh yeah, Kira's got the 10-and-a-half! ;)

Captain X - I think you should actually get your degree and stay in college if you want to fly an F-16 'cuz that is obviously required to fly the F-16 'cuz everyone knows to fly an F-16 you've got be an officer and you could then be really cool and nit-pick others and also write really long run on sentences with no point. :D Oh, was I being facetious?

Love,
One of your military brethren (now CAL) who is also pulling for Mr. Hat and everyone else who is a good guy that wants to get on with a major.

FTA was never a "perk"...

Actually Ben...the 113 went over with their vacation, sick bank, vacation passes, etc. The only difference was that they carried their 2001 pay rates over to CAL as opposed to their 2005 pay rates.

-Neal

I was at the IAH LEC meeting when the agreement was explained to the pilots. Vacation passes, sick bank, etc. aren't perks, they were items of the FTA that were recodified in to the MOU + LOA that brought the 118 group over to CAL.

The 118 never got any "perks" for going to CAL and the 118 never had any OTS people in class that they were one day senior to on day one.

Sincerely,

B. Franklin

It depends on what metric you're looking at.

I did the financial math on it (planning on a 10 year upgrade at CAL, 6 at SWA) and SWA won out by $1M over the life of a 30 year career.

Capatain-X, Just out of curiosity, what's the spread if you make CAL a 4-5 year upgrade instead of 10? I would think SWA might still have an edge, but it'll be close.

just get one of those cheezey online degrees that gives credit for "life experience" and you write a few papers that no one reads. All done online and by mail, then you get a certificate from some unknown non-accredited university. CAL doesn't care or know where your degree is from or how legit it is.

There seems to be alot of contempt for online education on these forums. Doesn't matter if it's a regionally accredited institution or otherwise. To me, an unaccredited school is a complete waste of time, period.

If I were sitting across the table as a CAL recruiter from a perspective newhire I'd have more respect for the guy I'm interviewing who worked full time while out on the road earning his degree versus somebody who's parents footed the entire bill/process.

Online courses are offered at schools such as Oxford, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, and many other "such" schools. Online degrees are the present and future, like it or not. So, for the guy who thought it would be a good idea to achieve his degree online with the goal of getting hired on at CAL, I'd say absolutely: Go for it!

A guy getting his 4 year degree from an accredited online school while balancing another job has my undue respect as well. However cobra, I can assure you, most folks that got their degree at a normal 4 year institution were not just sitting around having their parents foot the entire bill. Most people have 2 (or more) jobs while in school and still going to school full time. Those folks deserve just as much or more respect. And getting your a$$ kicked at the USNA, USAFA, or West point for 4 long years...well, that's another story better told over a beer! :)

My issue is that I do not have a college degree....which means that they will hire me but I really have to stand out. I am trying and I have signed back up for college in an attempt to show them how badly I do want to work for CAL.
I don't know about anybody being "restricted" but I do know what my situation is from a very reliable source in hiring at CAL. I'm sure I am not blackballed, I'm a pretty good employee you know.

I still have some tricks up my sleeve. There will be a few people stopping by the CPO's for me next month after the holidays....I haven't given up and hopefully it will work out.

HAHAHAHAH!!!!!! Thanks for the laugh! I seriously doubt that's why.

Nice rationale though.

I'd take that money you'd spend on college, because you want to work for CAL, and invest it. That way when their retirement goes away you'll have that money compounding in something that will help you out as you work for CAL.

What retirement? There is no pension at CAL anymore...so your statement holds no water. We have a DC plan and that money is solely ours (and no one else's).

Continental will hire without the degree.

As to the back and forth, guys! What happened to the days where pilots were faithful to one another?

Who gives a rat's turd about where you went to school, whether or not you went to school or whatever the issue du jour is?

Mr. Hat will get most likely get called for an interview soon.

Captain Overs, So much negative energy towards CAL. Did one of us sleep with your wife or are you just mad at the world? Lighten up, friend!

LJ - we've got to argue and b!tch about something my friend...we're pilots after all.

Happy New Year - Cheers - Scrapdog

This thread has some of the best and the worst of the forums.

Honestly, I don't know for sure that the Degree thing is the problem. Ask me in six months, if I ain't there yet, the degree is the problem.
As for finishing my degree, CAL was the wake up call....I am finishing it because:
1. I don't like to be held back
2. For the same reason I quit smoking. How am I going to tell my son that he has to go to college when neither his mother or his father has a degree?

Thanks to all my friends who have my back! I'm honestly suprised at how many have come out of the woodwork in my defense. Cheers to you all.

Well in that case, PBS sucks!:D

Happy New Year!

No one slept with my wife. You guys just get so defensive so quickly. I get a little pleasure out of seeing you so defensive.

what a pleasant addition to a cockpit you must be!

we know you hate CAL. join the club with the rest of your disgruntled and 'slighted' CoEx'ers who had it sooooooooooo bad.

CoEx was good to me and CAL is even better. i was at CoEx for almost a decade and rode a great wave that allowed me to eventually move on. i'm quite sure you have benefitted from the some wave that i surfed.

please tell us where you work now, Captain Overs, so that we may unleash some immaturity upon your workplace.

only then can we sit at our little desk and giggle at your displeasure. after all...isn't that what makes a real man?

Well said palomino - captain tool loves to chuck spears from a distance at CAL but quickly runs and hides. God's gift to aviation has yet to tell us where he is so mightily employed - and I know I've asked him the past myself.

Who said anything about being slighted by CAL or Express jet? You can call me all the names you want, think that you have me figured out, and flame me. It doesn't bother me because I don't take this forum seriously.

Do you guys think half the things said would be said if we were all held accountable? Some people take pleasure in that.

Relax, you guys act like this is the front page of the USA Today instead of an aviation forum online. Sorry you have to work the holidays. Cheer up, you'll be senior enough soon to hold them off.

Yawn...typical coward cop-out. Didn't your mom teach not to say anything at all if it's not nice?

Who said anything about us flaming you?

Actually, based on the original #'s I used (my age with an age 60 retirement, and current snapshot of today's pay rates -- no raises factored in), CAL was only shy of SWA by $648K over the life of about a 25 year career. Bidding "hyper-aggressively" (i.e. ya' gotta love EWR) would bring the two about inline probably planning a 4-5 year upgrade at CAL. We were told that, but honestly, I'll believe it when I see it.

The junior EWR 737 CA is a mid-'96 hire but spent ~3 years at Express due to the flow-thru/back after 9/11. Factoring that time "off" the junior captain at CAL has about ~7.5 years of seniority.
