Any EWR folks have good suggestions on towns within roughly an hour (eastern PA might be ok if it's not tooo far)of the airport? I am looking to rent a 1 or 2 bdr apt and don't like the city. I am specifically hoping for a safe town with rental possibilities 500-800/mo. It helps to have Bally's or a good gym around. Your suggestions will help narrow the scope of my search in an area I do not know.

Have you looked at Princeton?

It is a beautiful town. Lots of great stores and restaurants within walking distance of everything. A real nice university town.

Might be a little pricey though. You might find a good apt to rent near the student ghetto (which is still really nice).

I lived there in the early 90's and have many fond memories.

clifton is ok..not great but it may be in your price range...if you get roommates go to montclair..great town just little more expensive...parsippany is nice too..

Montclair would be good.

Location of Montclair State University as well.

Also has a NJ transit line run through town, lots of station stops. You would transfer once at Secaucus, to the North Jersey Coast Line train southbound to get to EWR.

I grew up in eastern PA, Bucks County and am actually there/here now. All of Jersey and much of South Eastern PA is getting very expensive. Try NE PA above ABE. Towns like East Stroudsburgh, Bangor, Port Jervis on the PA/NJ border are still affordable and about an hour to EWR. If I could ever settle with US Air or CAL or JB this is where I'll most likely end up although closer to the Lehigh Valley if US Air becomes a reality.

Sparta NJ is where all the old timer, pre dereg senior AA,DAL, UAL and CAL guys live. My parents almost moved there when my dad got on with UAL in 78 but both were from PA so we ended up here. Sparta is very high end.

Many JB people are building in the Poconos.

In NJ south of 195 in the Lakehurst/ACY area you'll get better prices but not by much anymore. Yeah I love Princeton too, have friends there but unless your a 777 capt at CAL good luck. A friend that lives in Princeton pays 1500 for a one br apartment (he's furloughed). My friend in Jersey city pays 3000/month for his 2 floor condo. He's a TFK so that explains that.

I saw a studio apartment advertised in New Hope, PA (10 mi from Princeton) for 2500/month last week.

PM me and I can help if you want.

Ever think about the Shore?

I live in Toms River and I can make to JFK in about 90 mon in the morning hours. I used to fly out of EWR with Kiwi and could make it there in about 70 min. It is nice father south if you are not into the city life. More and more people are moving this way. You have the beach, the bay, Not to far from the city however that price range you put down is going to be hard to find anywhere in NJ. Good Luck

There are apartments at the shore for 500-800/month. Where? An old fishing shed turned crackshack/MOFIA hideout off route 9?

Hopatcong, 40 minutes to the parking lot....cheap and nice town.

I'll second the Hopatcong area. I could be wrong but I don't think there are any apartments in that area for 500-800/month.

Thanks, guys...I drove all over today and am very frustrated--a 2 bdr is 1750/mo in Summit (15 min west off Hwy 78).

Now that I have internet again, I have new hope with the ideas you gave me. I was looking at Lehigh county in Pa and would consider buying a townhome there, so that was nice to see someone happy with the area. I liked Millburn but yeahhh...gotta be a millionaire, thanks for playing. Thanks again, guys!!!

Check out Sussex County north of Sparta. It is a lot less expensive and has lots of new condo developments going up by lakes and golf courses. 70 minutes to EWR.

Drive through the towns of Vernon and Franklyn. If you ski there are two resorts. If you are into sailing go live on a lake.

Raritan Boro

It's near Bridgewater. Clean town. Huge mall in Bridgewater. Lot's of gyms and such. Avg 45 drive door to door to EWR. Has a train station in town that can connect you with NYC or EWR's monorail. Rent's are right in your price range but closer to 800 or maybe even a bit more. 500-ish and you don't want to live there, unless you want to live over a bar or strip club (no strip clubs in Raritan but you get my drift). Stay away from Main street. Look on some of the side streets. Quieter and the houses are better kept. Anywhere in NJ that you want to live in and feel safe will not be cheap.

How about NY, just north of the NJ border? Nyack, Suffern, Spring Valley, just drive down the Palisades and you're there, about one hour if it's not in the early a.m. or late in the p.m. Or, if you're really strapped, head for Newburgh. You can get a crack shack for next to nothing.

True dat but there are hundreds of houses for rent in that range. You just gotta look. There are some in Washington, Hackettstown and Budd Lake for about that much though. They are close to Hopatcong.
