Today, April 29, 2004, the very last Oldsmobile will roll off the assembly line, as G.M. trims its fleet. Although I never owned one of these venerable automobiles, my dad had several "Delta 88's" over his life. Ten years ago, G.M. tried to revive interest in that model with the marketing slogan "It's not your fathers Oldsmobile any more". It did not do enough to stimulate sales. I guess with the redundancy of Olds, Buick, and Pontiac for so many years, there just was no longer a niche for all these clones of each other in G.M. cars.

So, it has now gone the way of the Packard, Desoto, Nash, Hudson, and others, into the halls of nostalgia. Our grand kids will not 'connect' to the Rocket 88 or 98.

It's old or we are or both.

Great memories...the Delta 88 "boat" with the mini ashtrays and cigarette lighters in the back seat. Never will forget the first gold 442 SS I ever saw parked in a friend's driveway in '68 with the two white pinstripes. I didn't covet it, I just wanted one like it!

Oh yea, that 442 SS was a vintage 'muscle car'

I was just trying to remember the difference between the W-30 and the W-31 model 442, around 1969. Anyone know?

My mom had a '69 Vista Cruiser with the trailer towing package, and the huge 4 barrel. Her mother had the Delta 88, a real sleeper. My dad had the Coup de Ville, and I had the Vette. A GM family, to be sure.

And who could forget the old Vista Cruiser with the big skylight roof. You could drag race while "Gettin' the groceries."

a good buddy of mine just rebuilt an Old's Cutlass, 442 in it bored 30 over...three speed that will lift the front tires off the ground when you really get on it...awesome car...

I heard that if you buy a new Oldsmobile, they give you a voucher for a free motorized scooter.

My Great Grandma had a light blue Delta 88. When I was a kid, it was the nicest ride in the family. Power windows!! Awesome!

In high school, my second car was a cherry '69 bug with factory air. That car was awesome.

One car I had while in the service, was a '67 GTO with a 350 and the Hurst Dual Gate shifter. Lots of fun and good romping power.

My second car while in the service was '76 Ford Torino. It was a slightly used Cheasapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Authority car. It had a 351 Cleveland with a four bbl, dual exhaust and the suspension of a dump truck.

At one time, Mom had a '72 98 land yacht, Sis had a'70 88 ragtop, and I had the '68 Cutlass Supreme. They were all very well built and reliable cars for the times. I was driving my Mom's old 88 when we got T-boned by a Caprice, right in the Driver's door. Walked away with a bruise in the knee. They were tanks. 8 mpg tanks.

dude, you had a goat??? why don't you still have it, those things rocked (the older ones like yours, not those goofy lookin 'judge' models)

The GTO wasn't worth what they are today...plus when you are making all of about 400.00 bucks a month in the navy.

I got that GTO in a trade with a friend. I gave him my 76 honda 550 super sport and he gave me 500 bucks cash and the car. The bike had a catastrophic engine failure about a month after we made the trade...so being the kind heart that I was, I gave my friend the GTO back, but kept the 500 bucks. I then went on to buy that police package Torino with the 500 bucks he gave me.

He on the other hand, sold the GT0 to a guy that restored them and then bought a totally restored convertible GTO with a three speed. He abused the restored car till it was junk and that was the last I saw of it. Kind of sad story too.

I hung out with a guy in the service that had a 69 GTO...that car was a blast as well. I kind of wish I had the presence of mind to have bought that car, but his brother destroyed it while he was out on a cruise.

Dont forget the late model smooth-mobiles... I drove this car around for 2 years till I couldnt afford to fix it anymore. Dam it was a sweet ride though.
