Emirates May Cancel Big Airbus Order
Thursday September 21, 8:48 am ET Emirates Airlines May Cancel Order for 45 Airbus A380 Jumbo Jets Since Delivery May Be Delayed

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Emirates airlines said Thursday that its order of 45 Airbus A380 jumbo jets was "up in the air," after reports that deliveries of the plane may be delayed.
Spokeswoman Valerie Tan said officials at the Dubai-based airline were discussing whether to go forward with the order.
"Things are up in the air right now. It's hard for us to say. We had such a big order," Tan said by telephone Thursday.
European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. said Thursday that it expects further delays in the troubled Airbus A380 superjumbo program.
The company did not provide details of the cost or timeframe of the delays, except to say that it expects to complete a review of the program in four weeks.
Airbus has previously announced delays to the high-profile program, but has come under strong pressure in recent days after reports suggested further holdups were about to be revealed.
rench newspapers reported Wednesday that some inaugural customers may face at least another six-month delay. Wiring problems were a main cause in slowing down the program.
Analysts have warned that more hitches could further shake current and future customers' confidence in the project. Airbus so far has booked 159 orders for the A380 but needs some 300 to break even on the project.
In June, Airbus shocked airlines by revealing its second six-month delay due to production problems. At that time, it said it expected to deliver to launch customer Singapore Airlines Ltd. by the end of 2006. Shares in Airbus parent company EADS fell 2.4 percent to 22.33 euros in Paris trading

This airplane was evaluated at NWA for possible passenger service, the numbers were so awful that it can't even be considered. However, Airbus has created a fine cargo aircraft with great numbers, and NWA cargo is seriously considering them.

I forsee..... an aircraft that is as financially succsessful as the Concorde.
Roger that.....How over budget is this thing how anyway?? I have a friend at Boeing that told me it is so over budget that it will NEVER be able to make any money! Aaaah, the french, where's camembert when you need him?

It brings a little joy to my heart everytime Airbus gets kicked in the sack.

It will make money, try to keep in mind that Pan Am first purchased 747's in the late 60's for under $20 mill each. Their were US airlines still using early 70's vintage 747-200's for 30 years. What does a 747-400 cost today? List price according to CNBC was over $150 mill each (I know no one pays list) but my point is that they will eventually get their money back.

I would love to see it fail and for Boeing to capture more market share (which I see happening in the short term) but the reality is an aircraft designed today is and will be more efficient that anything that Boeing can do with a 747.

The world is expanding and on any long haul leg over 10+ hours you just can't turn an aircraft around fast enough to get max utilization out of it. That is why companies like Quantas are all over the A380.

Yeah and all the US suppliers who will be hurt......Moron go back to your barbie.

Sorry Mr. "Big Jet Driver". In the future I'll keep my opionions and my love for Boeing to myself. This way I don't offend your superior "Big Jet Driver" ego. F**king toolbag.

Yeah why don't you go to an US 380 part supplier front gate today and as the shift workers are about to head home. Say" I am so glad the 380 is screwed because I love Boeing". Tool box. Got a clipboard on board?

That's fantastic that you go right for a personal attack when someone disagrees with you. I'll be you were one of those officers all of us NCO's used to roll our eyes at. a dissenting opinion in your ranks was grounds for administrative discipline, right? I'm done with this, as you were.

I am curious: Why is it not a good pax carrier? (Pretty obvious why the cargo dudes want it, though.)

I am aware of the long boarding times issue that was published a while ago.

Nope,....Boeing loved the fact that Airbus built this airplane. They did their home work. The 747 was a success because of it offered range and speed no other plane offered. Very few pax 747s are sold today because airlines don't need that capacity. The 747-800 has economics better than the A380. The trend is point to point and more frequency. Capacity is not the issue. Flying a a380 half empty is far more devistating than a half empty 787. This airplane will be a huge failure for Airbus and a huge financial loss because the orders will stop with or without all the problems. The 747-500 and -600 programs were canceled because it was never a profitable business case. Airbus's ego got to them

Didn't UPS order some of them?

Yeah ... woo-hoo ... I have yet to speak to a SINGLE soul that is excited about this gargantuan French turd joining our ever-expanding fleet variety. :p

I'm with you Master Shake ... I definitely get a good feeling when anything the French attempt either fails or falls apart! Imagine a thousand little Inspector Clouseau's all trying to build an airplane at the same time!!

Ok, Ok ... I'll give them the wine-making thing and maybe acquiesce on the cheese thing, but they definitely don't make or even consider applying a satisfactory deodorant! :D

Agreed. It's great when anything French fails. The French cant stand failure though, are they ever poor sports..........just ask Lance....or Floyd.

They can't even win in the wine wars, California is kicking there a$$ lately.

How many French men does it take to defend Paris?

No one knows its never been done!!!

Don't forget the French championed your war of independance against the Brits and gave you Lady Liberty...

Airbus is NOT a French company. It's a multinational consortium, with its' HQ in Toulouse. Many of its' major suppliers are American companies, providing work for and income to American families.

Airbus subcontract many components to Boeing, Lockheed and others.

California wines are OK. If you think that French wines suck, then stop buying out of the bargain bin at Safeway and look in the "$20 and over" rack. French wines are better than anything I have ever tasted out of the USA, South Africa, Chile or...Australia...(shudder - now THERE'S crap).

I dislike Airbus products. I fly their three largest machines and I think they suck. Don't confuse the issue. The French are arrogant A-Holes at times and they build strange-looking cars, but you cannot beat their class, style or food. French is a delightful language and their women are first-class.

I think the "Blunderbus" will fail commercially, but it's an impressive monster that I would love to fly...once.

Oui. Ces't La Vie, Mon Homme....

For a bunch a Homos in little tight pants and striped shirts ( who look like Mimes most of the time) them Frogs got it "Goin' ON!"

Gimme' a French girl, with a big patch a hair here and there, some stinky cheese, and a good Beaujolais....Well, I'm in Heaven and goin' to TOWN Mister!

That there is some Intercontinental LIVIN'!

1. unusual operations make this thing a nightmare.
2. You have an extra 150 passengers with virtually no additional cargo space for high priced mail/packages.
3. Capacity flexiblity in unforeseen events makes this thing a no-go vs the 787.
4. 4 engines
5. How do you file an alternate that doesn't severly weight restrict this thing?
6. No quality track record established yet.
7. Would you really want to be a passenger on this thing the way NWA would configure the seats?

Australia...(shudder - now THERE'S crap).
Cpt. Underpants,
Regarding the Australian wine comment, F you buddy... You've obviously never tasted a good Australian wine i.e. Penfolds or Rosemount or any of our other good stuff... Either that or you wouldn't know a fine wine if it was smashed over your head :)

Also, whoever made reference to "QUANTAS"?? - shudder it's QANTAS. Please show the second oldest, safest and among the most admired airlines in the world the respect it deserves by SPELLING IT CORRECTLY...

OK, rant over, continue...

CU,

I give you a tip of the hat for trying to explain a view outside of 'France Sucks' to this crowd. Although with this crowd it is probably equivalent to peeing in the wind.
