FYI:

I see on aviationemploymentboard.com that Emirates is hiring FO's and DEC's. Thought some of you might be interested if you missed it. Max 56 y/o for capts, 49 for FO's.

Maybe Typhoonpilot can add to the details.

Hello, my friend. Yep, Emirates is still hiring. Seems to stay steady around 200+ per year, but it will have to ramp up beyond that to cater to the growth starting in March. We'll take two new 777-300ERs in March and then one per month, on average, for the next two and a half years. The A380s will probably start in 2007 and the A340-600s are in there somewhere as well. They've also got their mind set on A310 freighters for some regional work, maybe four or five in additional to the one pax version remaining.

The website to check for terms and application is www.emiratesgroupcareers.com

Quite a lively thread on Pprune about a recent change to the Terms and Conditions. It isn't a positive change but it is hard to say the sky is falling when in fact we haven't yet seen how it will affect actual pay.

Emirates isn't paradise but it isn't bad. I'd attach a picture of my Mauritius overnight yesterday but I wouldn't want my wife to see how much fun I have on my trips. Beats the heck out of the Ramada in Rochester.

Recruiting target guys current on the 737NG series, 747-400, 757, 767, 777, A320, A330/340, and occasionally A310 and MD-80/90. They have hired some RJ pilots from Air Canada who had previous narrow body time and some Bae-146 drivers, but generally they get the guys they can put onto a short course for the A330 and 777. We'll see a lot more Boeing guys hired over the next three years with the deliveries so 737NG and possibly the EFIS 300s and 400s would be good to be on.

Hey Typhoon,

What's the upgrade process like?

I have a friend at Cathay who has told me about their Captain upgrade interview: In the boardroom under the bright lights, your file on the overhead projector, peppered with questions, etc.

Just wondering if Emirates had something similar.

Good wings though. Marketplace Inn had GREAT wings. Anyway, I think I"ll be applying.
So true, but not as good as the old Airways motel at BUF. No good wing places in Dubai yet. All we can get are those scrawny little ones that some of the American chains try to pass off as appetizers.

There is an interview and you do need to study for it. I studied for eight straight days and managed to squeak through. Mostly technical and FOM questions.

The upgrade is three months long and is quite intimidating. That just seems to be the culture. As long as a person can fly and make decent decisons they get through okay.

From my understading of Cathay's upgrade process I would say ours is much easier.

On the Emirates online application there is a question about outstanding bond, in USD. What is an outstanding bond? Anyone know? I got the USD part figured out though. ;)

A Bond is similar to a training contract. In other words, would you owe your present company money if you left right now ? If so, how much ?

Emirates' F.O.s have a 3 year Bond for $36,000. If you leave prior to the three year point you would owe them a prorated amount of that Bond.

777 or A330 for newhires?

Typhoon,

I really appreciate your posts. I have never been to Dubai but I hear great things - a lot of glitz and neon like Las Vegas... What is the likelihood that a newhire would start on a 777 vs. an A330? Does previous Boeing or Airbus experience slant you one way or the other? Is one fleet better than the other in terms of pay, schedule or variety of destinations?

Lastly, do you know of any Emirates pilots who commute to Dubai from Europe?

Thanks

The likelihood of starting on the 777 is getting to be high now that the 777 will comprise most of the deliveries for the next two and a half years. The previous experience does slant you one way but not always. The former 757 chief pilot at Canada 3000 was put on the Airbus.

Pay is based on time in the company only so it matters not what airplane you fly. Schedule and variety are personal preference. They both have good and bad. The mixture will change as the new airplanes come. The Boeing will pick up old Airbus destinations and the Airbus will start going to new places. They both fly to Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Only the A340-500 goes to New York and it will probably be the airplane that goes to South America when we start service there. Right now the A330 and A340 are co-flown and those guys will be the first to go to the A380 when it arrives.

Some pilots try to spend a lot of time in Europe on their days off and it would be closer than, say, Australia, but commuting is frowned upon here and the new changes to the pay rules are meant to discourage it even more.
