A few months ago I posted a thread about me having to land a plane on an unlit two-lane road at night in Pensacola, Fl... well, the news station that I used to work for did a great 3 Part Series on the story and they posted it on the internet. If you would like to read and/or watch it on the net, check it out...

Sounds like you used sound judgement, bro. Glad it worked out.

Also glad the media didn't use the opportunity to shi! on some aspect of aviation.

Yea I tried to keep them in line with this story... since I used to work there they kinda listened to what I had to say.. but of course, they did spice it up a little bit... somebody told me that from the story it sounds like I was lost... just for the record - I wasn't lost.

In these stories, the controller never gets due praise, so I will give kudos to her. Gotta love those local controllers who not only know what road you're over, but also whether there's much traffic there that time of night.

Engine Out

Great job Nick,
Way to keep your calm in the heat of the moment. Only thing I can say is...Why the Air Force. You should think about the Marines, and flying the mighty C-130.
Every time I am out in the beach practice area, I think about "if I loose an engine right now, where am I going to put it down? I always shoot for the road, not the beach." You did it man. Great job.

Thanks for all your feedback! I was afraid I would get some negative comments like.. "you should have done this.. ", etc... because I have gotten that at the local airport here...

Nice job. I've wondered (every time I fly a single at night) what I'd do if it quit. land on a road, hope to miss the wires and signs.

No second guessing you on this one. Both of you walked away, and it sounds like the plane wasn't even hurt. You couldn't ask for more.

I'm sure you'll spend plenty of time thinking about what you did or did not do on your own. I do know you beat the odds, keeping cool and flying the plane.

Second on the comments about ATC. I'm impressed your got such good information. I think it would be worth buying her(?) a drink.

Good Job Nick!

I feel for your comment on people saying "You shoulda done this..." I posted here last summer about an emergency landing I did on a single lane road here in Oregon. A cylinder blew and I lost all oil pressure and put her down with one my students aboard.

So despite the fact there was no damage to the plane or passenger my chief instructor ragged on me that I shouldn't have told the newspaper guys that showed up that I made an emergency landing. I should of told them it was a precautionary landing. Didn't matter that all the oil was gone (covering the empennage).

I have to say though, I hope I never have to do one at night. Sounds like you did everything right. Good job keepin your cool.
The press does love to juice things up though - that last part about fire racing through the cabin. That was good!

Jim
