US Airways buys 25 mid-sized planes

August 3, 2006
PHOENIX --US Airways passengers will get a cushier flight next year as the airline replaces its smallest planes with a fleet of mid-sized jets.
US Airways will spend at least $625 million on 106-seat Embraer 190 jets. The first of 25 planes will become available in December.
"It's filling that sweet spot between our smallest Airbuses and our largest regional jets," Senior Vice President Andrew Nocella said.
Nocella said many of the 50-seat planes that US Airways currently flies likely will be replaced by the Embraer 190, a roomier ride with enlarged windows and cabin space.
The jets will be used primarily on the east coast, flying out of Philadelphia. Nocella said US Airways will use them for flights between Philadelphia and Hartford, Conn. and Providence, RI. It also will fly between Philadelphia and Dallas or Houston.
The Embraer is currently used by many regional airlines including Jet Blue and Delta Connection.
Nocella said the purchase won't affect US Airways' relationship with any of its regional carriers.

All 25? Does anyone know how many 70-100 seat jets fly for the new US Airways? It is good news, but 737-500's hold about that, maybe a couple more. What is the new payscale for the E-190? Just asking, no flame intended.
