By Order 2009-10-8, the Department (DOT) is selecting SkyWest Airlines, Inc., d/b/a United Express, (SkyWest) to provide subsidized essential air service (EAS) at Hancock/Houghton and Muskegon, Michigan, Paducah, Kentucky, and Eau Claire, Wisconsin. DOT is also re-soliciting proposals at the remaining four communities -- Alpena and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, International Falls, Minnesota, and Tupelo, Mississippi. At this time DOT defers setting final rates for the hold-in service provided by Mesaba Aviation, Inc., d/b/a Delta Connection (Mesaba), at all of these communities until after staff has discussed its costing of those proposals with the carrier. As a final matter, DOT will require Mesaba to continue to provide EAS at each community until replacement service is fully in place at each community.

As a Mesaba pilot, this troubles me more than anything that has happened in my 5 year career here. And yes, I was here through the bankruptcy. Not only are we losing those cities, but they are going directly to the competition. Not that I had much faith in managment before, but this certainly doesn't instill much confidence. (Delta and Mesaba managment)
 
Is Skywest going to be using the CRJ or the Bro for this? If it is the CRJ... Dumb. Not at all cost effective.

A CRJ, but thats alright, our increased cost or change of health bennies will make up for the low bids. hahahahaha.
Or just cnx 1/2 the flights like Mesa did out of CDC. hahahaha

When you say they are going to the competition, do you mean Skywest or United? Looks like these will be service to Chicago and that Delta is turning their backs on these markets.
 
I find it interesting that Skywest/United seem to think they can make it work with CRJ when Mesaba/Delta apparently can't seem to make it work on the Saab.

Fine, if we can't make money on it, drop it. Let them have the wonderful winter experience in CMX on the crj and the culture and brown recluse spiders in PAH. I will miss the station personnel and diner in EAU though. If we're getting rid of at least 23 saabs, some cities do have to go.
 
I grew up in PAH. What is bad about the culture? As for the spiders talk to your hotel committee.

It was sarcasm. Mesabas backbone has always been the small and medium communities. Now with DL in charge that seems to be changing.Obviously DL isn't confident any longer in these markets, so have fun Skywest.

Not at all surprised... Delta/Mesaba intentionally overbid the price on these routs with the Saab because they have NO INTENTION of keeping ANY Saabs as the leases come due... (look what is already happening/Delta's history with the Tprop) not to mention the timings set up by NWA for the contracts/leases in their bankruptcy... Delta basically wants 76up feed to their international hubs to send people overseas... The Saabs and eventually 50 seaters have no place in the new Delta.... And Lee Moak is playing right into that with how he has given away all the scope and protections to keep the smaller end stuff around. Soon Delta will be a wide body company and its "regionals" will be anything "narrow body"....if we are lucky they don't outsource everything to foreigners....

Its EAS flying. Doubt they care how cost effective it is. Uncle Sam will be paying for it.
