Is it better to have a professional sounding user name on the online app such as actual full name or is wackiness culture still in play over there and anything goes?

I beleive the only person who sees your user name is you and the guy in tech support, HR only sees your profile and real name. I would use "Joe Smith" to be safe, however if you feel lucky, using your middle name as your first name and your street name as you last name, lets them see your porn star name.

User Names

I would suggest that you use anything that is not offensive. Normally the interview folks don't see it, but sometimes they will print out a list for pilots who call in and say they forgot their login name. If they see something offensive on that list, you would be starting with one strike against you before you ever get to an interview.

Use something like Hugh Jorgan, or Miles O'Toole, or Ben Dover...maybe even Haywood Jablomey. They love that stuff! :)
