I saw this story and almost fell over... I realize it is their country, their laws, their culture and you, as an American, will never be one of them. Don't even expect it. That said, this story is a REAL eye opener if true:

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/201...jailed-for-8-months-for-sex-outside-marriage/

There is no logic to this situation. No way would I allow my daughter to visit Dubai by herself. This is very scary business and the mentality is frightening IF TRUE.... Just remember this story every time you check into a Starwood hotel (I'm going Marriott from now on).

Wow, that is scary. Unbelievable.

Bye Bye---General Lee

Please check the statistical odds of your daughter being raped, or involved in any other violent crime in Dubai, then compare it to any big US city. Based on that, should you worry about sending your daughter to Dubai, or should they worry about sending theirs the the United States?

What is nuts is how they define rape in Dubai and the fact that she would be jailed as a result of her own rape (i.e., sex out of marriage). That is the point.

I agree that Starwood Hotels' response and total lack of support is surprising too. She should sue Starwood. I am sure this is not playing well in Australia...

Scary, for a 23 year old virgin that lives in his moms basement? Don't worry, the Dubai 3 aren't likely to come to your basement, although your mantitties might attract them, due to their size....

Real classy! Serious subject and you try to be funny. I am sure you are a joy to fly with...

Nothing worse than a F/I guy who takes himself too seriously. I am busy trying to expose Genny Lee for whom he really is, a pimply faced basement dwelling troll.
Carry on...

That I completely agree with. Dubai does have several laws based on their religion, and they are all crazy as far as I am concerned.

The above story is bad for sure - cant believe I missed that on the news....I was probably too busy reading about the Cleveland girls..

Dude, full on epic post of the year!

Word to the wise:

When in Dubai, don't shave yo man-titties.

Many in Australia didn't know about that either, until now....

keep defending them ....change your wardrobe and dont call for help at the nearest american embassy

Your airline flies here. Go to your mgt, stop defending it and insist on a boycott.

& if the tanks do roll here again...lets make sure half a million don't die looking for something that didn't exist.

Now this last statement speaks millions.

I don't care how many get killed. They kill Americans they pay the price period.
If you don't like to be killed then don't bother us . You start we finish , simply said

And yes US Legacies and ALPA will fight the Gulf Airlines.
Find a business model with camels to make money
Please relate this to your management

What Iraqis killed Americans before Mar '03? Are you seriously suffering from Palin dementia? How many degrees/languages/types did you say you had on the other thread.?

You sound like a high school drop out overdosing on juice in the gym who's answer to complex global issues is "just nuke em all"

Actually now that I think of it you probably are. Part of the reason people come on here is for some intellectual exchange on broadly similar levels. You don't come near the mark and are actually an embarrassment to the flag. While I disagree with GL at least he articulates his argument like an adult (well most of the time)

This business you engage in of flippantly recommending the taking of multiple human lives at the drop of a button on your keyboard is exactly the level of comfort those who seek to mass murder Americans deal with. It underlines your lack of gravitas and understanding of issues. Disturbing.

Part of being American is giving the presumption of goodwill to your fellow human being regardless of color, creed, gender etc. a pilot living overseas is not making a political statement, he is paying the bills (and handsomely at that) while getting on with the business of life. The envy of people like yourself & GL manifests itself in attack. After all nobody from EK jumping on the DAL thread telling you how your life is because we don't have a clue - yet you do?

Comical

I think ualgrizz has you covered.

Sniper huh? Having served I highly doubt it.

It was a good question. What did the Iraqis do prior to 2003? Saddam Hussein, as bad a guy as he was, was a secular leader who had no love for religious extremists and was doing a pretty good job at keeping Al Qaeda out of the country. Because Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and company wanted cheap oil they decided to create a crisis that did not exist (WMDs). Their quest for control of the oil in Iraq (which netted Halliburton/KBR a cool $39.5 billion) created a huge power vacuum and allowed Al Qaeda and other organizations to grow and flourish.

What total bull********************!

Saddam had WMDs and used them against the kurds. Even Clinton and the UN knew Saddam had WMDs. Those same WMD's were shipped to Syria and Iran before the war.

As far as not supporting terrorists, you are way wrong on that too.

http://www.9-11commission.gov/hearings/hearing3/witness_yaphe.htm

Saddam was a huge supporter of and used the services of terrorists.

So the US invades a country...hundreds of thousands die as a result of that action and we pound out chest and say. "We'll they used to have them"

Freakin nauseating

No WMDs, no support of the 9/11 plot...fact.

Big difference between had and have. Especially when you are talking war but I guess it's ok if my buddies make money and oil is cheap.

Hey, the UAE is full of extremists who want to burn unsuspecting American boys and girls at the stake! Those are crazy bastards just don't think like the rest of us, and they are scary people. If you're smart, you will avoid the UAE like the plague!

Just so long as our salaries stay high, I honestly don't give a rip what you ignorant racists think.

Dubai is a lot safer than most US cities, even for women. The rapists of this Aussie girl were not locals, they don't work in hotels. Seeing the uproar in India lately about rapes, it would not surprise me if the rapist were from there. And that you see in the local news here in the UAE occasionally.
A very active sex trade (government tolerated) centered around hotel bars and a few nightclubs doesn't make a rape story sound very believable, especially when it happened at a hotel bar.
Her story is most likely true, yet how often do we hear about rape stories that later on turn out to be fake and used as blackmail against a guy?

In Dubai I see women walk all by themselves all over the place at any time of the day / night. Like many other countries in Asia, or Europe. Do you see that in the US? No. Like one of the commenters: we always are in a big group, always someone doesn't drink and someone always watches our drinks and we go together to the bathroom.

Dubai is full of single young women there for work (without expats the place would not exist), who move around freely, 24 hrs a day. With 1.2 million people on a few square miles there are always going to be some problems, and the justice system might not be always in your favor. That goes for everywhere, even the US. How many rape cases are turned away by the police every year?

Going for a drink? No problem. Don't create a scene for which the cops need to be called, and don't drive (maybe this policy should apply to the US....).

There should be no reason why a women should have to wear a black tent (so men don't get exited). Yet they wear perfume and make-up (to make themselves more attractive to men). Maybe it is time for these women to stand up for themselves. If their husbands can walk around in t-shirts from Ferrari or some British football club, Armani shorts and Gucci shoes, I think so should she be able to. I hope some of the local young women in the UAE see how foreigners dress, and change their own patterns. There are quite a few muslim countries where women don't cover themselves (in black), yet somehow we don't perceive them as being muslim.

RJCAP: I think that article hits the nail pretty well on the head. Going around the world and visiting / living in places off the beaten tourist path gives you a different view on things, unless you are the hotel hermit like I know some.

A small amount of research on your part would reveal that while associated with Islam, in fact the covered women was cultural long before Islam existed....go to the mountains of Mexico and many other place...you find the women covered in black there as well...but they sure ain't Muslims

call black veils culture if you like....middle east, mexico..I dont care where...

humans covered with black skin were once associated with slavery....and they liked it NOT one bit

women compelled by "culture" to defer to men are as enslaved as those in chains...it they don't realize it, it's no less real...

I heard in Dubai a teacher raped a student 14 yr old girl, the girl committed suicide, and then the teacher got a 30 day prison sentence. Oh wait that was here in America. Nevermind.
