I realize there are more pressing problems in the world, and perhaps I'm sharing just a little too much, but dry pressurized air really takes its toll on my sinuses.

I've tried saline spray and even KY Jelly (not the warming kind) and eventually induced a full blown sinus *infection*. Not good.

But a Capt that I recently flew with recommended a "nasal emollient" called Ponaris.

It ain't cheap. A one ounce bottle cost me $20, but it seems to do the trick.

It lists the active ingredients as: Oils of Pine, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Cajeput and Cottonseed.

The directions recommend half a dropper-full in each nostil but that seems to be overkill. I just dab a little in each nostil before the flight and it'll last all day.

So, for whatever that's worth, there you go. Good luck.

Mar,

Give your (or a local) E.N.T. a call and ask for a box of sinus rinse. It'll run you about $10 bucks a box and the box will last you 3 or 4 months.

My sinus's got so bad I needed surgery. I use the rinse now every morning and I haven't had a sinus problem or a cold in a long while. It cleans everything out of there!!

that sinus rinse stuff works wonders IMHO.
lots of saline on long hauls and dry areas (PANC/EFHK for example)
drink lots of water - lots.
clarinex helps for me also during bad allergy season

If all else fails a week on Miami Beach helps too!

dry, crappy air is the one thing I wont miss when I retire.

I'll check it out.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I assume it's saline based?

I get a lot of colds anyway, think it might be worth it? I don't fly anything pressurized or at high altitudes.

How does that stuff look? ^^

No, but somebody who had the plane ahead of me was wearing a cologne that made the shoulder harness fill my sinuses with the smell of a mixture of sweaty fat ass and barbershop. Cheezus Crust! It made my neck itch so bad, I couldn't wear the dang thing.

I thing the next time we sinus up a new pilot, the chief better make sure it aint another cologne wearer.

Besides the neilmed stuff, there's this (available at most healthfood/hippie stores): http://www.bytheplanet.com/Products/Yoga/neti/Netipot.htm

Something else that helps: humidifying your layover hotel room. I wring out a wet towel, drape it over the heater/ac unit, stick the tail of the towel in a bucket or wastebasket full of water, and run the fan continuously. It's amazing how much water it will wick up; makes a huge difference in comfort.

While flying, plain saline nasal spray is good, too. You can get that OTC anywhere.

Neti-pot

Do search for neti pot.

you can make a saline solution with warn water. It rinses the sinuses and has been used for many years in the East.

My wife uses that...works good (she says)

a few more thoughts....

no drugs (Floenaise SP)

it goes deeper than a saline mist such as Ocean, etc.

Warm water with a little salt is easy to obtane and is inexpensive.

A palstic neti can travel in a suit case

This might be a stupid question, but dosent saline (salt) dehydrate?
I wonder if the saline in saline solution might actually cause more of a drying effect on your sinus?

Ok, ok, here is a little routine that I find helpful, however, I suspect this is going to take this thread down the trail to . . . .

I boldly continue with these two suggestions:
I believe it is helpful to rinse out the sinuses--I use warm water in the morning, or whenever (no salt). Just a handful snuffed up each nostril slowly, will do the cleaning out. Be sure you don't inhale to quickly.

The other suggestion is an ounce of prevention. I use Burt's Beeswax lip balm.
In the morning I rub a little bit on one finger and lightly brush the inside of the first nostril with it, then I switch fingers and do the second nostril. It moisturizes and helps keep the nose from getting dried out.
Be sure to not use the same finger twice!!

Have a Nice Day!

well how about if you're a nose picker like Pickin' Pete (over at ASA). With all that beeswax in there, you can't get a grip on anything good.

I did'nt say to make beeswax buggers-- I said to use an all natural emollient!

I can't believe I got two pages out of this! SCORE!

You know, I've tried Burt's Beeswax on my lips and got some severely chapped lips. It's just me, but I don't think I'll put that stuff up my nose...but if it works for you then go for it.

I don't know if saline dehydrates but I don't think it's a great moisturizer. It might be really good for "rinsing" but I think that's a separate problem from moisturizing.

Right now I think I'm sticking with natural oils. Petroleum jelly would probably work except I think over time you'd gunk up your sinuses and risk an infection.

At least with the oil there's no gunk to accumulate.

So on that note, let's take a deep breath.....And release. :)

No Petroleum Jelly--it is a gasoline derivative; not good for the body. I know, I know millions of teenagers use it everyday--it is also drying. Stay with products that are derived from plants. That's my last word on this.

Drink lots of water! Not sodas or coffee. One of the first things I do when getting on the aircraft is to get 3 of the big bottles of water that are stocked on the aircraft and give one to each crewmember. The most important thing to do is to keep as hydrated as possible. One of the first signs of getting dehydrated is getting tired. Slug down a bunch of water.

I know that it is difficult on the long haul flights not to start drinking lots of cokes and coffee. I would just keep it to a minimum. Just make sure to drink more water than any of the other beverages which are diuretics (sp?). Since your on an aircraft that has a head you can drink as much as you can.

Another idea that is possibly simpler than a lot of other suggestions is to just carry a washcloth in a ziplock bag. Wet it down with water and place it over your nose and inhale. That should humidify you nostrils somewhat.

Good Luck To Us All!

That's funny. For a second I thought you said, "no coffee".

No coffee?

Surely, you jest.

Hats off to you for passing out water. You're my favorite kind of crew member.

Cheers. :)

Mom, would you please stop following me around. It's kind of embarrassing. Seriously, I'm sorry we bought you the broadband for your birthday. Also, I'm having your cellphone turned off.
