A drunken British tourist on a flight to Dubai tried to throttle an Emirates cabin crew member after she refused to serve him more booze, a court heard.
Roger Caine, 56, was stormed to the back of the Manchester to Dubai flight and attacked the 25-year-old crew member, yelling four-letter abuse about Arabs and Muslims.
He warned her she should be scared of him because he was Jewish and she was a Muslim. Caine, from Manchester, was jailed for three months and fined dhs 5,000 by Dubai court.
The crew member, an Egyptian, told the court that she decided to stop serving whisky to Caine. “He was drunk already and his condition didn’t seem to allow him any additional drinks.
He was yelling being very loud and rude, cursing at the cabin crew and bothering other passengers,” she told the court.
Prosecutors said Caine grew agitated when the crew member repeatedly ignored his drunken demands and he followed her to the airplane’s kitchen area where he grabbed her by the neck and tried to strangle her.
Nearby passengers and crew and came to her aid, dragged Caine off her and restrained him until Emirates flight 018 on December 1 landed in Dubai. Caine was arrested by police at the arrivals gate and taken to Al Rashidiya police station where breathalysers confirmed he was highly intoxicated.
Crew members Amanda D, a Briton, and Shera S an Indian testified that Caine threatened their colleague and told her that she should be scared of him because he is Jewish and she is Muslim.
Dubai court convicted Caine on all three charges including deriding Islam, physical assault and alcohol consumption.
Caine, who is Jewish, later apologised to the cabin crew and the airline admitting he was intoxicated and saying, that he usually travels a lot, but there were only a few times when his drinking got out of hand.
