Dreamliner 737 for Southwest?

Rumor has it that Southwest is talking to Boeing to develop a Dreamliner 737. Anyone else heard of this?

That is nothing new... It is pretty well known that Boeing is planning to build a 737 sized aircraft based on 787 tech. Exactly what that will be, and when we will see it is unknown.

I would expect that SWA would be one of the first in line for such an aircraft, but they will be pissed that Boeing won't offer it with Round Dials! (I kid I kid!)

I can fully see many of the large US airlines lining up for such a plane. AA and DAL need MD-80 replacements, CAL will buy anything Boeing puts out.

I asked Herb last month (ran into him, no joke) about that. He said they are still working on the engines for the follow on 737 and that will determine the size of the aircraft. So stay tuned!

Boeing started the 787 with -800 and -900's with the intention of making smaller varients that will be the -100's/-200's/etc. I've been told it will be the 737 replacement.

737 RS is still 5 to 7 years out due to engine manufacturing issues. They can't produce a more efficient engine yet, and that is what the RS will be all about.

It is pretty much conceded that new engine technology will not be ready until about 2017. If you read Aviation week and Space Technology, it is mentioned probably once every other week.

Kinda weird, the 787 has engines, but then again it probably won't ever fly. Hybrids were in production in less than a year when oil shot up.

The 737 replacement will be ready when SWA says it will be ready.

In a recent issue of Aviation Week they interviewed Steve Udvar-Hazy, the mogul of airliner leasing.

He said that SWA wanted a twin-aisle 787 based replacement for the B737.

He also said that Airbus had a big problem in that they can't build a fully composite fuselage because Boeing had enough patents to lockup that type of design.

It's too bad Boeing ended the 757 to keep making the POS 737, especially the -800 and -900. The '57 is a much better platform. But, hey, SWA gets to keep that common Type...

Sat next to a Boeing manager a couple weeks back and said the earliest Boeing would deal with that is 2012, they have too much on their plate now with the 787, 747-800 and just filling the existing orders they have now.

Boeing was going to build the 737 next, but now has to build the 777 Dreamliner first since the A-350 will be competing with the 777 not the 787. Also will be a new type rating.
