Ok, at the current hiring rate at most regionals and the lower standards for times for new FOs, what will be the situation a year from now? Lets think about it. Hire a 250 hour guy/gal fly them as much as possible and a year from now you get a 1250 hour pilot with little experience and not enough time to upgrade.

My point here is that a year from now, considering the mass exodus of current pilots to the majors or other industries, who will be qualified to back fill their positions? I think this industry is in real trouble a year from now. What do you think?

I wanna know how people get around the 250hrs PIC requirement for the ATPL? If you get hired with 250hrs there is no way if you only work at an airline that you can get the time!

I predict an economic downturn will save the day. Furloughs all around and a collective laugh at the good old days when we used to talk about a "pilot shortage".

This is already happening to a smaller extent at Lakes...going to be interesting if things keep going great guns.

I don't know about the JAA but here, 250 hours minimum for the commercial under part 61 and 190 hours under 141. 1500 hours for the ATP.

Read about what South African is doing....

This is going to get (and already has) unsafe. As if I didn't have enough to worry about, now my FO's trying to get me dead or in trouble.

§ 61.159 Aeronautical experience: Airplane category rating.

(a) Except as provided in paragraphs (b), (c), and (d) of this section, a person who is applying for an airline transport pilot certificate with an airplane category and class rating must have at least 1,500 hours of total time as a pilot that includes at least:
(1) 500 hours of cross-country flight time.
(2) 100 hours of night flight time.
(3) 75 hours of instrument flight time, in actual or simulated instrument conditions, subject to the following:
(i) Except as provided in paragraph (a)(3)(ii) of this section, an applicant may not receive credit for more than a total of 25 hours of simulated instrument time in a flight simulator or flight training device.
(ii) A maximum of 50 hours of training in a flight simulator or flight training device may be credited toward the instrument flight time requirements of paragraph (a)(3) of this section if the training was accomplished in a course conducted by a training center certificated under part 142 of this chapter.
(iii) Training in a flight simulator or flight training device must be accomplished in a flight simulator or flight training device, representing an airplane.
(4) 250 hours of flight time in an airplane as a pilot in command, or as second in command performing the duties of pilot in command while under the supervision of a pilot in command, or any combination thereof, which includes at least—

They are probably arguing that the F/O is performing the duties of PIC while the PF.

So it meets the requirement for the FAA but not for Southwest right?

You have to look at the airlines 121 certificate, a lot of times the requirements will be changed. Much as if you go through a 141 program for you IRA you do not need to have the 50 hours XC PIC to get the rating.
