My question is what is Iran really trying to do with all this?

I'm not military, just a casual observer of world events. They're up to something, I just can't put my finger on what they're trying to achieve.

If indeed, as it seems, it turns out that these Brits were clearly in Iraqi territorial waters, then this whole thing may backfire right in the face of the Iranians. That's what I don't get. Are they really trying to pick a fight with one or two of the world's super powers? Surely they're not that stupid.

It was just a comment (and others around here have said the same) because of what was made public on the part of the US that the bad guys may use it against any future POWs.

No I think what you said was F'd up. Nothing was ever made "public." It was information released by a single individual thinking they were doing something good (how I'll never imagine) which amounted to a huge act of treason and a massive security breach. The damage those pictures did is imeasurable. I've also been privey to a fairly thorough breif on the matter as well and know a lot more than was ever told by the media (or that they knew). Your comment just makes you sound like a sheep, believing exactly what you watch on TV and never considering all sides. If your mil back ground is as extensive as you say, your comments make me wonder if it ever included formal resistance training.

Doesn't matter what kind of experience anyone has, they haven't done a review of recent history if they think that anything those people do are a direct response to Abu Gharib. Compared to the atrocities commited by the avg terrorist, a leash around the neck is nothing. Ever hear about what the Iraqi's did to captured Iranian forces during the Iraq/Iran war - especially the senior leadership? These people (by that I mean all of the extremists) have been commiting these acts before A.G., before the war in Iraq, etc. They have their motivations, and they are more related to eliminating infidels from the face of the earth (jihad being exactly that - the war with the infidels) than responding to A.G. Iran's motivations on the other hand are singularly related to winning the PR war in the US and Britain, and trying to turn public opinion in those two countries even more towards a rapid withdrawl of forces since they have their operatives trying to win that region over (importing/allowing free movement of insurgents, importing sniper rifles, importing explosives, etc.). A little one up against a superpower during this nuclear showdown doesn't hurt, either. While I am certainly not a proponent of what happened in A.G., I by no means think that we are where we are with our Middle East relations because of that. Read the accounts of the hostages held for 444 days in Iran and see how many times they were forced to endure mock executions, etc. - I think that we will find that the 15 Brits would probably rather have a leash put on and have their photo snapped rather than endure what they are currently enduring. We'll know whether this is a true statement only after they are all released.

P.S. - also remember how Steve Centani and his camera man and that female journalist that was captured all "converted" to Islam and made video statements of how well they were being treated - until they got back to friendly territory and started to tell what they really thought. In a given situation, I think one will normally say whatever keeps them alive as it can all be retracted after release.

Now, let's talk about Abu Ghraib before we were there. It was a bastion of murder, rape and torture in proportions that we don't even want to comprehend...I think it would make Albie, and the laughing Jakal(I like that one by the way...used to be a JaKal myself) want to puke in the midst of the daydream of making those SOBs dance! But, the only difference is the media interpretation(translate: spin) on the events. Where was the media when people were being brutally murdered, tortured and raped in Abu Ghraib for years?! They knew what was going on...but, it wasn't chique to be opposed to Saddam...no, it's only chique for our media(before Fox News, God Bless) to be opposed to all things republican. So, a few Iraqis had to lay in a naked dog pile, and all of a sudden we should thank our lucky stars that the Brits haven't been ravaged on TV? Bro, if you served...I appreciate you, and your sacrifice, but come on! Please don't allow yourself to be manipulated by the media...

As for Iran, IMHO I don't think they've been tortured...at least not physically. I really do think the wildly manipulative President of Iran who has been losing support exponentially in his own country, and is on record for saying he thinks Israel should be wiped from the face of the earth, will continue his game of cat and mouse with world opinion and treat them fairly well, while garnering support, and also continuing to defer attention from the fact that his nuke facility needs to be bombed, and destroyed. He won't win any favor in the world of public opinion by torturing those folks physically...just remember sleep deprivation, verbal threats, food doping and other things can make people say and do the damndest things.
