Amazing the responses I get on FI about this issue considering that most of you complain about the job and pay most of the time. So I throw a comment about boredom out there and BOOYAH, pay is great and time off is awesome, beats a desk job.... blah blah........very interesting.

I take it all back!! This job is great!!! I just finished a 3 day trip yesterday with an almost 48 hour layover. Banged a chick there at the hotel. Bid on a beach duplex and chowed at Crabby Bills....

You are missing the point. I think being an airline pilot is the most exciting flying that exists... the problem is that flying is boring. I don't think aerobatics or military flying is exciting either.

I am not talking about excitement = rise in adrenaline, I am talking about exciting being fulfilling... which a career in aviation is just not that fulfilling..

Unfortunately, much of airline "flying" isn't flying, it's riding. Give me a good Cessna 120/140 any day. A 1/2 hr practicing touch and go's on a dirt strip beats 2 hours of systems monitoring in a whizjet.

I personally don’t find it boring, and it’s definitely not brainless. There are things to do even in cruise and takeoff departure approach and landing get really busy.

It only seems boring because the people sitting at the front of jets have all the training and experience needed to make it relatively easy to them. Take that away and it would be a harrowing experience that would end in disaster.
That defeats the purpose of airline flying though which is smooth and safe flights.

You guys all missed the point, I don't think flying a fighter jet is any more exciting than an airliner, in fact, I have never cared about military aviation, even as a kid.

Flying anything is basically boring. I am talking about jobs that accomplish something and actually make you think and actually pay good. I am not talking about 200k per year, I am talking about liquid, 500k+

It is funny how so many of you immediately talk about flying "something else" for fun..... typical pilots, always goes back to flying.....

Hate to break it to you, but if you have done it once you have done it 1000 times..

Are you trying to convince other pilots to look for other jobs to try to justify you not liking it?

Flying isn’t for everyone that’s why there is a shortage of pilots. Go be happy doing something else.

I never thought flying was boring and I spent 35 years in airline flying.

I did find flying routine but my job was to make sure things were routine. If nothing happened, I'd done my job.

There's a big difference between boring and routine.

If you find flying boring I'm not sure what you expect from flying.

But I'd suggest you look at military flying where you can fly upside down, pull 6 Gs, blow up stuff on the ground or air wrestle with bad guys in other airplanes. That might be fun...for a while since I don't think they let you do that to age 65 nor could you or should you be able to do that to age 65.

If you're talking about a career producing an income to get you to the Eternal Dirt Nap without starving, perhaps you could do both the routine/boring and exciting stuff. Lots of people do.
